True Duals worth it? How will it sound? How should I do it?
The subject says it all. I'm thinking about getting true-duals now, but what is the best way to do it? What kind of sound should I expect. What mufflers do you suggest?

really, it is not worth it. If done right it could sound real nice, IF you find a way to rig up an H-pipe. It WILL scrape over speedbumps though. A 3" single pipe catback flows enough air for 350+ hp. There are far more cost effective mods you can do besides this.

The muffler specialist by my house will do the set up for a 1000 bucks. He runs 2 2 and a half inch pipes down the stock location coming off your headers. This includes cats, mufflers, pipes 4 inch x 20 inch chrome tips out the back. But if you honestly think about it, it's not worth it because the pipes are not mandrel bent. They are that crinkle pipe for the money go with a hi flow cat and a Borla.

I have true duals on my 86 transam. i felt it was the only way to finish up the car since i put a 350 w/ cam, custom chip, headers, etc.
my guy had 2 2.5 inch pipes going into 2 - 2 chamber flowmaster. the mufflers are side by side where the cat used to be. i think they were part #325408. these were the only ones that would fit because of their smaller casing. then he routed the pipes side by side and have it exit where the stock pipes used to be. it's probably the best mods i've done to the car.
gas mileage went up, and it feel a lot stronger. the sound is unbelievable.
by the way, there is no scraping at all, since he actually had everything above the stock hangers. That means the whole system is actually higher than the stock 3" pipe. No scraping what so ever.
the whole system cost me about 500 bucks w/o muffler. the mufflers cost me 100 bucks each.
anyways, i like it a lot.

Can you tell me EXACTLY how it's done? I dont see how I could fit 2 mufflers where the cat is. You said the pipes exit at the stock locations? How did you do this? Did you just use a 90* bend after the axle and run the other pipe straight through? Could you post some pics?!

I'll try to get some pics this weekend if i can. trust me, the muffler are side by side and barely fit where the car is. they are probably only seperated by a .25-.5 inch. But nothing rattles or scrapes.
To anyone:
If your in the San Jose, CA area. Just go to A-1 Muffler in Morgan Hill. Tell him Gary with the Trans Am sent you. oh yeah, let me know when you go over there.
to take the pipes all the way to the back, he bent the pipes over the axle and put them back there.

My brother-in-law had an 84 Z that a guy had previously built up. It had headers and a custom dual exhaust. From the headers it went back as 2 2 1/2" pipes following the original routing but where the "Y" and cat. converter was two generic super turbo mufflers were hung on generic hangers that were tack welded to the floorpan of the car. It then had two short pipes that came out of the mufflers and ended about where the back of the front seats are. I don't remeber if it had an H-pipe, but I would definately utilize one in a dual pipe setup because it is proven to help the sound and performance. However it did not sound as good as many of the borla'd or flowmastered Stangs I hear around it did sound mean as hell for a third-gen. Definately better than the 2 into 1 aftermarket cat back systems. And that was with generic mufflers, if it had 2 chamber flowmasters it may have been even better. Keep in mind though the car had an old 'Vette 327 with a lumpy cam. I know that also helped it's sound.
