What to buy first??

Okay I'm on somewhat of a budget. The car is currently stock and I want to put a new exhaust on as a first step. I have intentions of replacing the engine with another small block in due time. So here are my questions: 1. Will most headers work with another small block when I do replace the engine? 2. Should I buy the headers or the cat back system first? I will be doing most of the work myself and then once the exhaust system is complete I will have a muffler shop do the welding for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest doing the cat-back system first. If you get headers, they will out flow the rest of the exhaust and cause small back fires, it happended to my friend in his 88 IROC 305. Cat back is also MUCH MUCH easier to install. Hope this helps!
