Gutted Cat

I have an 84 305, with no mods at all, and just single exhaust. I was thinking of cheap mods for it and thought about gutting the cat. What is the best way to do this? Also, I have two cats on my v-6 parts cars. Could I gut one of them and put it in place of the one I have now, Because I don't want to mess up the only one I have for a v-8. If course that is if they are engine size specific. Also, about how much would this help? And what would be the difference in sound?
Thanks
Evan

I just gutted mine today. I dont have it all together yet, but I have a few tips. First, do it outside of your garage because it gets really messy. Wear a breather mask. Im sure breathing in all of that dust cant be good for you.
As for actually doing it, I used a long screwdriver (about 32") and a hammer. It seemed really difficult at first, but once I got going it wasn't too bad. It took about ten minutes all together.
I would imagine that it should breath a lot better now. those things are really restrictive.

Make sure to get a piece of piping and slide it through the inside of the cat. Otherwise the turbulance will be so great it will do more harm then good.

What do you mean about sliding the pipe through the cat?

When you gut the cat you go from a relativley smooth flow to a very turbulant(sp?) flow caused by going from a small area to a large open space back down to a small area again. Putting a piece of pipe through the gutted cat restores a smooth flow.

you might wanna just put a straight pipe in there, i just put one in my 91 RS with a 305 (31,000 miles) and it didnt make it ANY slower at all. It made it a little peppier if you ask me! I think you should at least TRY it before you say it wont help, you'll never know until you try
