Thoughts on Pace Setter headers???
i was flipping through a JC Whitney catalog, and i saw the add for street legal pace setter headers with "armor coat". They are $365. I'm thinking that this could possibly be an equal medium between the economy of TES headers, and the quality of SLP headers. Am I on to something, or are these things garbage???
thanks for the info

Nobody else responded, so let me give you my take.
I was looking at them as well. Pace Setter isn't your typical high-class brand, but they do make decent products (I had a pair of their turbo mufflers on the '57 w/350 for years, they're now on a '68 Camaro 327). But, these headers to which you refer have 1-1/2" primaries, which are 305 or low-RPM 350 pieces. I tried to find out what the cat inlet pipe size was, but didn't get a response from either JC Whitney or Pace Setter.
If you want to run over 4500 RPMs, I'd suggest going with at least a 1-5/8" primary header. Personally, I'm looking at the Hooker 2055 system from Summit, $350 (black painted - add $185 for coated), all the AIR & O2 fittings. Higher priced, but a more appropriate size (3" cat inlet) for a 350 or higher rev'n 305. Even more so if you're really going to go with NOS.

thanks for replying, i was wondering if anyone was going to. I never even noticed the primary size, you right thats way to small, especially when i shift at 5200 rpms. Do you have part numbers for those hedman headers?? the price doesnt sound too bad at all...
thanks

Ummm, Hooker is what I'm looking at. The Hedmans were slightly higher if you want the emissions hookups & y-pipe (which I do). 2055 is the Hooker p/n, I believe Summit calls it HOK-2055.

I'll have to take that back. The Hedmans are about $40 less than the Hookers w/emissions hookups & y-pipe. However, they don't list the primary size. I believe I've heard somewhere they're 1-1/2" as well, but can't confirm.

I have anew set of pace setters hear beside me that I will install when it warms up.The primaries are 1 5/8" not 1 1/2". I just measured them with a didgital caliper. The out let of the y pipe were it goes into the cat is only 2 1/4". Im going to gut the pipe off right in the y joint where its big enought and graft(weld)a piece of 3" pipe long enough to replace the cat and hook to a 3" cat back(also Pacesetter)(sorry guys im on a budget).I have to have the 3" pipe bent at a shop.Im not biulding a ultimate racing machine, just tring to wake up a L03 a little with a few bolt on's.

WOW, thats seems like way to much work for me. I think i'll just skip it and go for the hookers, that is when i actually do it. I just ordered a new shifter so im strapped for another week or so...
