Peformance Questions

I am restoring a 1984 z-28 with an L69 HO engine.

I would like to modestly increase the HP of the car. Ultimately I would like to get 250-300 hp. I don't know if I want to keep the 305 or replace it with a 350.

Q1) If I update the exhaust can I use it with a 350, if I decide to replace the 305?

Q2) I'm an old guy used to 60s muscle. The purpose for upgrading exhausts then were more to improve flow, hence performance, than for sound. If HP is the goal (It is mine), then you look at the most restrictive parts of the exhaust system and work on that. What are the most restrictive points in a stock exhaust system (Catalytic converter?, Manifold? what? Catback?

Q4) I am on a tight budget, and need the most value for my $. If the manifold is key to performance, what is the effective differnce between a $150 set of headers and an $800 Set of headers?

(Thanks in advance)

Q1) Yes
Q2) manifolds, Y-pipe, cat, catback, in that order
Q3)?
Q4) on a mild 305 or 350 there would be very little performance difference & not worth the price. Stainless does last much longer than mild steel though. Depends on how long you want the system to last. Small difference in performance on the smaller engines though.

If you are on a budget, you can get a full new exhaust, from engine to tail pipes for less than $700. Edelbrock sells a great set of 1 5/8" primaries w/ 3" collector headers that include a 3" y-pipe, all mounting hardware and emissions equipment for less than $320, I got mine for $310 from Jegs. I got my 3", mandrel bent cat-back system from Hooker, also through Jegs for $260. Catco sells a replacement converter for about $50 from Summit. The Catco cat isn't a "high flow" unit, but its new, which means its not clogged like your stock one is and thus it will flow much better
