Header Wrap

Just wondering if any of you guys wrap your headers and if so for what reasons? I can see that you do it so everything doesn't melt but the companies claim "performance" gains is this true?

They'll keep the underhood temps down, thus increasing the amount of cold air getting into the engine.

There are however negative sides to header wrap. I've researched it, and though if done right (which may be tricky), I would never use wrap.

Ceramic coating for me.

Before someone jumps down my throat again, I have never used the wrap, but have read people's replies on here.

1. if not sealed properly can increase the rate of corrosion
2. any oil from leaks that drips on them can be a fire hazard, one guy's car actually caught on fire

I believe that's it, unless I missed something.

Yea the coating is better, we wraped the stock cars headers then took the wraping off one day to replace it and they where rusted to hell. Ive also heard another reason to do this is to make the exhaust gas move faster out of the headers, ( something about hot gas moving faster than cold, so the hotter the better! )

proper prep and application of the wrap is key....do it right and they wont rust.

if you want to do header wrap,

here's the proper procedure:

yeah if you are concerned about keeping under hood temps down, and cant afford to get the headers ceramic coated (no question that ceramic coating is better), header wrap is a great, cost effective alternative (if done right).

I heard if you have both that ( heads coated and wraped), oh hell I don't remember I think it was about the heads breaking from heat or something.

92transam....i think what you were saying is that if you wrap and have the headers coated that they will rust and you might wind up with holes in the headers and not even know it. I read that somewhere....correct me if im wrong though.

Any header that is coated with ceramic shouldn't rust anytime soon, I would think.

you dont need the wrap if you have the headers ceramic or jet-hot coated
