You just need to do exactly that, bash out what is inside the cat. You can use anything even a long screwdriver. However, you will have a little dificulty when it comes to the AIR tube that is inside the cat. It runs right through the middle. You just need to try and break it off on the wall on the inside where it comes in. It'll take some time, just use a screwdriver or something with a fairly sharp edge. It's also a good idea to crimp the end where the AIR pipe comes out of the cat and not attach it to the one going back up to the engine, cause exhaust can leak back up. I just crimped it and put a dab of high temp silicone on the end to make sure it closed. Most people seem to try and put a pipe through the cat when it is done. I have recently tried this but my pipe didn't fit. Hopefully you won't have this trouble. Good luck.
