Heated O2 Sensor

I have an 87 TPI motor and have recently gutted the cat, I have been advised to use a heated O2 sensor. Is this really necessary? How can I check? Where and what part do I need? And how do I hook it up with the two extra wires? I just want to make sure my car tuning doesn't become effected. Thanks.

Bosch p/n 13077 for 92 LT1 Vettes. The black wire is the signal wire and the two white wires are for power and ground. It doesn't matter which one you make hot or ground. I used a GM weatherpack connector when I made the harness for it. I ran the hot wire to the fuse block under the dash and connected it to a source that's only on when the car is running.

From what I understand, the heated o2 is needed to make sure the car goes into closed loop. Having the cat on which causes the backpressure, also causes more heat, which actuates the o2. I could be wrong, correct me if I am, but I think the o2 needs 660 degrees in order to go into closed loop, think I read that somewhere. If it doesn't read it, it will keep it open. I am wondering if it really necessary too, and that's what I'm asking. Thanks.
