no cat-back safe?

My friend has a 84 305 HO. when he bought it, it had flowmaster on it and sounded good. after a while the flowmaster fell off and he was left with a straight pipe over the axle, which sounded even better. now the pipe fell off and all he has is the y and a cat (sounds about the same). I was wondering if this was safe for him (toxic fumes) and his car (fumes on metal and paint). I plan to do the same thing for a few months if it is safe.
thank you for your help.

It's probably not that great for him, but I had the same setup for almost 2 years. The exhaust just rusted right off the end of the cat. I can still move my limbs, remember my name, and walk a straight line. I know that CO is bad for you, but there isn't much coming in the car. After almost 2 years, I didn't smell exhaust once.
Make sure there isn't a way for the exhaust to enter the cabin.

Yeah, I have trouble fitting in time to respond to posted messages. What with dating my family members, eating pork chops, and chasing 'coons, my schedule is pretty full.
There's that classic Tas friendliness, shining through. A$$.

doesn't any thirdgen look absolutly lame without some kind of dual tips peeking out from the rear??
I know how good it sounds because I drove around like that for a couple weeks while I waited for my headers and borla cat back,my nieghbors didn't like me much those two weeks!

I've had it fixed for a while now, Flowmaster, with a 3" catco cat, and a cut-out. When the stock stuff rusted out (a long time ago) I was a poor high school student.
