the valve seals could be bad, or you might be burning a little anti-freeze i don't really know i had that problem myself when i first got the car

Blue smoke is usually oil.

If you get a cloud of it when you first start the car it's likely that the valve guides are worn.

If it blows smoke when it's idling or when you're just driving along the whole motor is probably worn and if your 83 has the original mill in it that may well be the case.

I have an 83 TA LG4 with about 100k miles. The emissions standards for an 83 aren't that strict. Mine smokes a lot and got a conditional pass. We think the EGR is plugged and that caused the problem.

Before they do the test take the car out and run it hard. When they do the test make sure the motor is still hot.

I've been told that it helps to run some (Sunoco??) 10% alcohol/gas mix through it for about a week before the test. (or was that methanol/gas ??) Anyway, you can buy the stuff at a gas station.

Also, check the choke pull-off assembly. If that's shot it'll run rich and smoke a bit.
