Muffler up front?
Why are mufflers in most cars in the rear?
Convenient location or performance?
I notice that many SUVs/trucks have the muffler in the middle.
Thanks

That's about the only place a car has room for it. I think that closer the muffler is to the end to the exaust the deeper the note, but i could be wrong.
The way I understand it, you want the restrictions as far away from the exhaust port as possible. As the exhaust goes down the pipes it cools and has a smaller volume so the further away a restriction is the less of a restriction it is.

I have seen a single 3" muffler put where the cat was. They then ran 2.5" pipe out to the rear. The car sounded good, nice and quite with a slight rumble, but the muff scraped on big bumps.
