Flowmaster 3-inch after-cat system on 91 RS 305?? Will it work??
Flowmaster 3-inch after-cat system on 91 RS 305?? Will it work??
Sorry for my ignorance but I have a question about the 3 inch after cat system from Flowmaster with dual outlets on each side (PN FLO-17233 from Summit). I have a brand new stock after cat system and a new cat. (It wasnt my choice but it was free). I really want the flowmaster 3 inch system but I dont want to replace my brand new cat with a 3 inch one. My stock system is 2 1/4 inch, I think, correct me if Im wrong. Will the new flowmaster system still bolt up to my new cat?? What I mean is can I do it without having to take it to an exhaust shop for them to weld up a new pipe or something??? In the July 2001 of Chevy High Performance they did this on their '87, but didnt really mention how. Also, in CHP they said they got this system for $240. Can anyone tell me where, Summit wants $316 for it. Thanks.
I basically posted the same exact thing a week or 2 ago and never got a response. (I have a 305 TBI with the 2.25 inch pipes and want that exact same system and yes i got the PN from CHP too!cool mag! ) I'm just gonna have the local "cool" muffeler shop do it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to go to the muffler shop too. Im still deciding on whether to get the full 3 inch system or just get the single muffler, but there again it has a 2 1/2 inlet and we have 2 1/4. I really dont see why the 3 inch wont work with our cars. The cat has a male flange and the I-pipe has a female flange (i guess thats what its called), so as long as the cats flange is at least 3 inches wide, shouldnt it work?? Can anyone help us out??
I am in the process of replacing my cat with a 3" cat and that flowmaster system. I can tell you by thursday night if it will bolt up. My guess is that it won't, simply because the flange on the 2 1/4 cat is smaller than the 3" cat flange, at least I think.
If I were you, I would just replace the muffler with an 80 series. A 3" catback isn't going to help at all if you are running it through a 2 1/4 cat.
Or save up until you can get both.

it can bolt to the cat fine. you don't need to go to a muffler shop. You can have exaust flow from a smaller pipe to a bigger pipe no problems but it becomes a problem the other way around. I got headers and was stuck with a 2.25" pipe from my cat to the muffler. LAME!!! took me a couple weeks to get my 3" pipe in. Now everything is 3" and goes together fine. You will be in more trouble trying to put a 3" cat on a 2.25" Y pipe collector because that would need welding or lots of step down adapters and clamps.
DON'T JUST REPLACE THE MUFFLER. I did that and its been nothing but a big pain in the a s s.

Thanks Tas, that is exactly what I wanted to know. I was hoping it would since my cat is brand new and I dont want to have to replace it.
To 92fire-audio, when you get your parts together will you test the 2 1/4 cat to 3 inch flowmaster system just to be sure and let me know. I guess I just want to be 100 percent sure before I buy this system. Also, in regard to my first post, does anyone know where to get this system cheaper than Summit? Thanks again guys for the help.

summit is the cheapest i've seen unless a shop in your hood has a deal.
i want 3" all the way down, so will these two make my match up even easier for me?

This can be done! You can run 3" all the way into the muffler (you may need to widen the exhaust hole that goes into the muffler to 3").
Bear in mind that the dual tailpipes are 2.5"
