dual 3" dumps
anyone have any suggestions/complaints about running dumps under thier thirdgens? I am running dual 3" with bullet mufflers under mine on friday and i just wanted to know if anyone else out there has tried this and how loud is it?
thanks
thanks
Well, how do you expect to get under the subframe/crossmember? I tried putting 3" collector extensions on and on the drivers side I could have modified the crossmember to allow it to run back, but on the passenger side I couldnt even bolt the extension on because it ran straight into the subframe and I didnt want to clearance my subframe. You will either need to have some kind of bend to go down around the subframe or clearance the pipe (ie: big hammer) to fit. After that if you can get the pipe bent/welded to go into the driveshaft tunnel you should be alright. You wont have great clearance but it should be drivable. To be honest I was going to go with dual 3" but decided it was un necisary and not worth it with my current setup. I have dual 2.5 currently with an h pipe and bullet mufflers and turndowns that are aimed outward/down. I think that the whole setup cost me something like 150-160 shipped. I have hooker lt's so they hung low enough to run 2.5 inch but I used the hedman s extensions in order to move the exhaust to the driveshaft tunnel which worked great on the passenger side but I had to modify the drivers side extension a little to get the pipe to run straight back. It then goes into the summit aluminized h pipe and then to the summit aluminized pipe(about 3 foot of it on each side) and then to the bullet mufflers and turndowns. I measured my ground clearance and I have about 4" at the collector and everywhere else I have around 5"+ clearance. I think it could be done with at least 4" clearance clear back with 3 inch but have one question for you first. What is your engine set up for and will you need that much pipe or are you doing it simply to have it like I would have been? Just so you know dual 2.5 inch has an area of 9.82, and dual 3" has an area of 14.14. Single 3" has an area of 7.07, single 3.5 has an area of 9.62, and single 4 has an area of 12.57. From what I have seen you can usually make up to around 350 hp fairly effeciently with single 3" If you consider that dual 2.5 is like having 29% more room for air to flow than a single 3" it should support some pretty good hp numbers.
Just something to think about.

ive got hedman long tubes and i plan on using the hedman x tensions in 2 1/2 in to a 3" h pipe, through 3"pipe, and 3"dynomax bullets. what does yours sound like? is it really loud?
i dont know what to expect other than its supposed to be louder than my friend's random technologies cat back. the reason i am gong to 3" is that im in the process of building a 500hp 350 and its just a little pre planning
as of now i have true duals in 2" form and its just too small of a pipe with my current engine combo
thanks, john

Honestly I havent started the car since I put the exhaust on, only in open header form because my carb was fubared. I will tell you it about deafened me with open headers. I would suggest just going with 2.5 all the way back. If you are using the s extensions you are using the smaller pipe near the motor anyway and that is where it matters. Once you have the 2.5 up by the motor and go to 3" you are doing no good, just causing more ground clearance problems. If you can get the s extensions in 3" (I couldnt find them) or you can have pipes mandrel bent to clear you could go ahead and do that but I figure for the 150 bucks to put dual 2.5" exhaust on your not loosing much and it will support quite a bit of power. If by chance you do decide to go ahead with the 3" do you already have the mufflers? If not I have a set of them sitting here if you would be interested. They have never been used. I only opened the box to look at them.

No pics yet. I just got it done a couple of weeks ago. I will try to take pics sometime but my camera sucks and wont take pics without a lot of light and my car is in the garage for now. I am hoping that this snow will be all melted soon. Yeah, I thought that it was kind of interesting that I my duals cost less than even the cheap catbacks.

will i have problems with the pipes going straight back or will they
end up in the trans tunnel without bending the pipe. ive got hedman long tubes.

You will have to have bends to get them in the trans tunnel. I used the s extensions pointed toward the center on my hooker lt's but with the hedmans you need them to move it down under the crossmember so I doubt you will be able to get it in the trans tunnel with them.

look at the pictures on this thread. It will show you about where the s extensions will put the exhaust with the s extensions. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...postid=1117602

My friend has 3 inch w/ bullets and dumps on his 71 Chevy truck with a mildy build 98 Crate motor 350. Sounds some kinda nice...Suprised it wasn't terribly lous till he stomped it...Oh I want that sound so bad!

hi, i just finished it. i hung it using hangars from autozone....its quieter than open headers, fairly quiet at idle, but when you stomp on it ... it sounds like all h**l broke loose, it is very responsive and sounds great at 6000 rpm. much louder than my previous setup and it blows the dust off my driveway... j/k i dont think i can get into my driveway
it sits pretty low where the turndowns are but otherwise ive got 4+inches of clearance.
not bad for 160.00$
ohh and p.s. pics are commin soon

i have about 3 inches of clearance where i had to clamp the hangars to the pipe. i will have more when i turn the clamps sideways(i was not thinking clearly at 11:00 at night
) instead
of straight like they are now. that is right below the turndowns.

i ran each pipe beside the tunnel, like on the edge. as for fitting the 2 1/2 to the 3", i had the hedman pipe expanded to the inside diameter of the 3" at a muffler shop. then, i just welded around the seam.
thanks, john
p.s., everyone that has heard it thinks it sounds BADASS, thanks for the inspiration.:hail:

everything is welded except for the exhaust hangars on the turndowns, (they did not have any way to disconnect them from the car or exhaust, so i clamped them to the turndowns)
So I only have part of mine welded. The pipes are welded to the mufflers and the turndowns are welded to the mufflers, but everything that connects to the h pipe needs welded. I cant take it anywhere to be welded because I am still waiting for the carb. It was supposd to be here today but didnt show.

that sucks(about the carb) i just swapped mine from tbi.
Yeah, I havnt drove the car in over a year. It was a stock lg4 car when I parked it. The motor blew up(throttle stuck and it over revved) and I did everything in the sig to it. I cant wait to drive it. Actually it already had the shift kit but that was about it.

good idea
The carb showed up today. Hopefully I will get it running this weekend baring any major problems. Now I just have to save up to put plates and insurance back on it. Thats ok, I dont think It would be best to make its first voyages right now being as it is snowing(sure wish it would stop). I have Bridgestone Re730 tires in the rear which are supposed to be good for dry and wet but not used on snow, I have a shift kit a stall and a lot more power than it had stock so I dont think that I want to get used to it on snow. At least the temp is up enough that most of the snow from recently has melted and now it has been snowing all day so far and it is only water and slush on the ground. If we could just get some sun to melt and dry this up it would be great.

I will be putting my 406 in this weekend and I recieved my headman extensions yesterday. I was considering spintech mufflers, they are supposed to have a smaller case and are kinda flat, my rear seats are already hammered up so that might help to. Your setup looks good 1989RS
Momar, how are you liking your setup in your car, do you like the 268xtreme cam?

I love the exhuast. My car is at factory ride height and has replacement IROC springs, but I never drag on anything. The only time I have drug was when I was flying down a country road and went over a big hump. I think it actually hit the s extension flange not the pipes thought(the flange hangs about .5" lower than the flange on the headers). Either way I dont think it would have done that if I didnt have the stupid autozone front struts. The exhuast is a bit on the loud side, but nothing like open headers. To me it is bearable. It tends to get a resonating sound if you cruize around 1500 but I actually kind of got used to that. On the highway when I am at around 2000 it is real nice.
As far as the cam, I like it too. It sounds awsome at idle(sig) and doesnt have any drivability problems. If you are using it in the 406 it should be pretty tame.

I had that cam in a 350 with ported 461 heads, I was just wondering how you liked it. I am running a 288xtreme roller in the 406, 288/296 236/242 and I dont remember the lift.
I think I could run an x without loosing any more clearance than I have now. I have considered getting one from dr gas. He has what he calls I tandems I think. Actually they are on this page: http://www.drgas.com/street-cat.html all you have to do is cut out a section of 2 paralell pipes and you can put it in just like you would an h pipe. Since my pipes are paralell I could probably just cut out the section with the h pipe and put this in and have it welded and keep the same clearance. These are about 180 just for the tadems though so it is a little pricey considering I only have about 150 plus welding in my exhaust for everything behind the headers.
