Go with the SLP's, their quality is much better, and IMO are the best. 91Z will probably be coming to say something on this also since he likes this subject so much, LOL.

I have been very happy with the TES headers, the only reason why I would spend the arm and leg SLP charges you is if I wanted the 1 3/4" size headers, if not, the TES are a great bang for the buck.

I definately noticed a power gain and sound change when I first put the TES on my old 305, the only bad thing is they rust quick, if you get them I recommend getting them coated.

Go with SLP. You get what you pay for. The more I read and talk to people, the less faith I have in any of Edlecrock's products.

There's a set of TES headers on both my 87Z and now my old 86 IROC (my brother's now). I have to say I have been very happy with them for the cost. Are SLP's better quality wise? Probably, are they worth the extra $$$? Not to me... Performance wise you're not going to get jack with one over the other unless you get 1 3/4" SLPs.

I agree for the most part with Ray and the others. I have the Tes system and they are the best set of headers ive owned. A set of 1 3/4 primaries on a TPI motor is a mismatch IMO. The TPI intake is a torque based design. Ive read to many dyno sheets to ever use 1 3/4 primaries on a street 350. On a Miniram motor yeah, thats a whole different RPM range. But on a highflow LR or SuperRam motor for that matter. I think its a mismatch IMO.

Ive read buildups on 400s that went with a set of 1 5/8 over the 1 3/4 priamary headers.
Because the overall horsepower and torque went down. There was a slight gain at the top. when the larger primary headers were used. But the over all was a loss,IM talking about 450 horsepower small blocks.

Just my 2cents!

They get the 1 3/4's to try to get more upper RPM HP range from the TPI even if it does take some TQ in the process. As said, TPI will always make better TQ than HP anyway, but u can always make up for TQ with a Torque Converter.

I don't know, either because my y pipe is bad or what but I gained only 1mph after tossing my headers on. Check my sig, I know my 60 ft wasnt great but mph should pick up. I would go with SLP 1 5/8.

Also, what are we talking here, a 305 or 350?? If its a 305, 1 5/8's. For a 350 1 3/4's.

The group purchase price makes the SLPs pretty competitive with the TES though...

Sorry, but have to disagree with ya. I started with Edelbrock headers on my old 305. Swapped over to SLP 1-5/8" Tri-Y headers and picked up 1mph and knocked 2 tenths off my ET. Track conditions were very similar too. The flanges on the SLP's are much better quality and actually measure 1-5/8". Well worth every penny....especially since I bought the SLP's on clearence for $399!! I'm still running them on my current motor but Hooker LT's are going in soon!

I spent $300 for my Edelbrock 6872 TES from TPIS. I then used stripper to remove the black paint, which Edelbrock clearly states in their instructions is for shipping purposes only. I then repainted them with VHT1600 aluminum paint ($12) and cured them in an oven.

That was two seasons ago, and the headers have not discolored nor rusted. I'd say it was a pretty good value at a total investment of $312 bucks.

Please please please use the search feature. This topic comes up all the time, and the same arguements get thrown around. I'd lock this if I wasnt in a good mood.

I dont like Edelbrock's header design. They use a lot of weld on the inside which reduces the port size. You dont want your hot exhaust gasses to shrink as they try to fit in the header.

Lots of people have Edelcrock's headers because they are cheaper, and say they are good because they've never tried anything else. However, I have not heard ONE PERSON say they they regret switching from Edelcrock to SLP.

SLP's 1 3/4" headers do not cause you to lose torque. I didnt. In fact I gained 37 TQ at the rear wheels when I added the LT4 HOT cam and TPIS intake and runners to my SLP 1 3/4" headers, over a ZZ4 cam, stock ported intake and runners, and SLP 1 5/8" headers. However, if all you're going to do is headers and exhaust on your street car, any 1 5/8" headers are fine, SLP, Edelcrock, Hedman, Hooker, Dynomax, etc. However if you plan to build up your 305, 350, 383, or larger, with nice heads and cam, your best choice is the SLP 1 3/4". They're the best emissions legal header out there for high performance engines in our cars. If you dont have emissions to worry about, get long tube headers.
