Will heads and an intake help exhaust sound?
Will heads and an intake help exhaust sound?
My current mods are in the sig. I like my Flowmaster, but it's not as "throaty" as I would like it to be. I want the "crackling" noise that old muscle cars make. I love being able to hear the individual "pops" from these old cars. My Flowmaster is only throaty when I rev it. It is just plain deep at idle. So, my question is, if I add a ported plenum, Edelbrock TPI runners, an Edelbrock TPI base, and a set of Air Flow Research heads to help my engine breathe better, will I get this sound? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think if you raised your compression ratio a bit it might help. Also, if you retard your cam by 4 degrees, I think you'll find that the raspy sound will also be enhanced.
Personally, I find that my car has that nice raspy sound at idle until the carb goes closed loop. then, the idle smooths down and gets quiet. At least, until I mash the gas!
I have sounds of the idle on my website listed in my SIG. Is this what you are looking for?

ws6, thanks for the reply. That's kind of how the sound is. But the sound I'm referring to is much slower. I don't want to retard my timing; I'd rather have it advanced. What I'm really trying to ask is, will more horsepower make the exhaust louder and more throaty? Thanks.

Dude, you're using a nuclear warhead to take out a tree stump. If you want that sound, you need true dual two-chamber Flowmasters and a big cam. If you want to go fast, do these things. If you want that sound as still go slow buy a mustang and add two chambers with dumps.
No flame intended, but you're going the wrong, expensive way to change the sound of your car.

Not on my 3rd gen, and I don't have it recorded on a website, but my '57 has exactly what you are talking about without a "wild" cam (notice idle RPM). It only obtained this sound after the 2-1/2" tailpipes were installed - when it was open behind the mufflers, it was just plain loud. Oh, I blocked off one side of the exhaust cross-over when I installed the intake this last time - that probably contributes to the crackling. It didn't do it before with Midas 2-1/4" turbo mufflers and 2-1/4" tailpipes and the exhaust cross-over open.
I believe the only way you're going to get that sound is with dual exhaust and very open or free-flowing mufflers (old glass packs used to do it). If you have an H-pipe between them or the exhaust cross-over open, it will reduce that crackling.
Personally, I'm not all that fond of it. But, I have neighbors I don't want to upset as I'm driving home from the track at 12:30 a.m.

Nothing crackels and pops like glasspacks or open pipes
Its not really the sound i like personally, but hey its your car, if its what you like go for it. I just always thought it was more an classic car or truck kinda sound but like i said, thats just IMO.

Thanks for the replies. cy Z28, I'm not going to get heads and an intake just to change the sound. I was going to get them anyways for more power, and I was just wondering if it would by chance make my car sound better. Thanks.
