Hi FLo cat?? or not

ok...i just found out that the headers i want need a custom y pipe. i am getting the hooker 1 3/4 long tubes. i also have the random technology hi flow cat converter(3"), and i will have the hooker aerochamber cat back. now...after evaluating my situation i find that the headers are NOT emission legal...so that brings us to my next point...should i even use this hi flow cat in my setup or should i just sell it new. either way when emmissions testing comes around in two years...ill have to put the exhaust manifolds back on to pass. thanks a million guys.

Muflex makes a y-pipe made specifically for the Hooker full length headers. The question of using a catalytic converter or not depends on if you are using this car for mainly street of strip. I have no cat right now but I will be putting one on in the near future. I believe that the low backpressure is actually hurting me right now.

You can't go wrong in putting in the hi-flo cat. It's not the end of the world if you can't use the headers! If you want something better, try looking around in the junkyards for the stainless tubular exhaust manifolds. Look in the engine bone pile; they are often still attached. They are good for the street and will satisfy the smog-legal appearance test.

but you see...i want the headers almost indefinitely. i was just thinking that...the headers wont pass emmissions....so why bother wiht the cat. its like 200 bucks...i could sel it. i dont mind swapping the manifolds and old oem cat back on at emmisions time. i just want reassurance that i should just sell hte cat and put a tube instead.

Not to flame anyone who defends emmision laws around here but Smog and pollution have been around this country (especially L.A) since before cars and factories. I recently found out that the L.A area was called the "land of fog" or "land of smoke" or something like that by indians back before cars were even dreamed of. So whether your running a cat or not I doubt will effect the environment.....YES I know this didnt answer your question, just some info I recently aquired

I would personally try to find environmentally friendly mods and I would run a high flow cat if I had one... I may look like a hypocrite from my sig, but I do what I can afford to my car and that is why I don't run a cat right now... if you have the patience to swap out the headers once a year then hey why not run the cat too...extra 20 min of work...

BTW regardless of whether the indians called it the land of smoke or whatever, the level of toxic gasses has risen since the industrial revolution and whether it's a natural occurance or not, it isn't worth totally ignoring. The indians didn't know that fog was different than smoke, so from what I gather, they were referring to fog 300 years ago which has since been replaced by smog... The EPA isn't a government conspiracy, and smoking does cause cancer and JFK wasn't assasinated by the FBI etc. etc.

Oh well I don't give a ****, I hate big cities anyhow...

carcraft magazine ran a test on cats with a 305 tpi car it made 5 ftlbs more with the cats in place and only lost 1hp.if you have the cat you may as well run it and save your self the trouble of having to swap one in every 2 years. as for the headers i was thinking of buy these and welding air tubes to them so i can run my smog pump and be smog legal. anyone done this?

there are hooker headers that come with the smog tubes and such like our exhaust manifolds, right from the factory.

What you can do is just remove the cat and when it's time for inspection just install it back again,,just an idea.

Of course I do my share for cleaner air.
