Hooker LT and Mufflex installed - PICS!!

Finally finished my header install. The Hooker SC/LT headers are a pain to install on our cars. I got mine in as I reinstalled the motor back in the car after a warranty rebuild.

The main problem is with cylinder number 7 spark plug. I have the AFR straight plug heads. The header pipe is way too close to the #7 spark plug. I HAD TO MAKE A SHORTY SPARK PLUG TO FIT and FUNCTION!! I took a standard AC Delco FR3LS plug and removed the boot tip and ground the ceramic isolator down about 3/8-1/2", then modified the length of the tip and reinstalled it back into the isolator. This new plug is very short and works fine in the cylinder. It may not have the exact same electrical properties of the original plug, but it works fine and eliminated my arcing problem.

I have hi temp plug wire and boot sleeving that help too.

I used the mufflex y-pipe for my install. It is tight to the bottom of the car but fits fairly well. I'll run the y-pipe (3" to 4") by itself at the track and I have a 3" Dynamax bullet muffler with a 4" to 3" coupler that I'll use on the street that exits before the passenger rear wheel. Sounds nice!!

I also had my Dad (Machinist) make me a very short spark plug socket to get to all my plugs. It fits over the plug, with the tip protruding, and uses a 3/4" wrench to loosen/tighten plug. It works great. If you want one he'll make some for $8-10 a piece shipped!!

Take a look.............

Got the same headers and heads(ngle plug though. Did you put the headers on before, after or during motor installation? Any tips?

Thanks

I installed the headers DURING my motor "re-installation" The driver side was a bit more work for me due to clearances with the steering column. I did not remove it at all. The pass side header has a removeable tube for cylinder #8 which helps to get that side mounted a bit easier. Both sides were installed from under the car.

I spent a good 2 hours "porting" my headers. I cleaned up the ports where there was "over-weld" and burrs and opened them up a bit. Be sure to port match your gaskets too. Also, I totally regret not getting them hi-temp coated. These suckers put out some heat and here in AZ it'll cook your engine compartment. I used a ton of heat shield and wire sleeving to protect stuff. I also wrapped the driver side header collector so that my clutch slave cylinder and attaching hose would not melt and cause a fire!! I now carry an extinguisher in the car too!!!

I'll update and improve my web site with more pics as time permits and feel free to add it wherever you guys like!! My teenage kids are setting it up for me!

Boy, the car runs superb with minimal tuning thus far. I can totally hear the difference in sound quality between shorty headers (TES and SLP) and "tuned" long tubes. It's sweet!! I am turning heads wherever I drive her........even Willie likes the sound of her as he tries to keep up with me in his Supercharged 305!!! :-)

Thanks JZA!! I'll try to get a sound bite on the website asap. My 383 does sound sweet and very healthy through that exhaust! On a long drive it does wear me down a bit. The five speed coupled with that exhaust makes me feel like I'm driving a "REAL" IROC!!

Phil, can you give any more detail on your hedder install.

I was quite happy to get my 383 to set down on the mounts and pinned to the tranny. I set the engine to trany bolts but did not put the long motor mount bolts in yet, thinking that I had better try to install those Hooker LT's first. I still have the lift connected to the engine ---- but I don't seem to be even close to getting either side on. Mine is an 87 and the 700 trans flanges seem to be the first obsticle.

Did you set the headers before pinning the engine to the trany --------- or when or how? Any clues would be appreciated.

Thanks

Change,

I set the headers when the motor was about 3-4 inches above the motor mounts and brought the motor down slowly to finish the install and tighten up the header bolts.

I have a T-5 tranny and not a 700R4 so I cannot tell what may be different. I installed the bellhousing and T-5 tranny long after I had the headers installed.

I did have to contend with the clutch slave cylinder taking care to insulate it from the collector's heat using header wrap on the collector and a starter heat wrap around the slave cylinder with heat sleeving around the clutch fluid tube between master and slave.

The starter is an issue too. I had to put mine on before I set the passenger side header and wire it after the install. Uggh!

I heard the Hooker headers work just fine with the auto trannys. It just may be that you need to put the tranny on after your headers like I did.

Hope this helps....

Hey Phil....looks good. Thanks for taking the pics too. I will be doing this exact install hopefully in the next couple months. I was wondering what driveshaft loop is on your car? How well does it clear the y-pipe. I really need to get one my car quick. Also, it looks to be a bolt in piece...is this true? Thanks!

David,

It's an "F-Body Performance" safety loop. They are in Phoenix, AZ. Their website is:

http://members.home.net/fbody/

It bolted in place and clears everything pretty well. The y-pipe is not too close to it. Y-pipe is closest to the tranny cross member. I may make a new one shaped like a capital M.

That way the two collector pipes can closely hug the bottom of the car and I may be able to add an X-pipe and dual 3" out to the back!!

Good times too!! Good Luck.

Hey GTA I noticed your in Canada. I was wondering how much the mufflex 4" system cost u after shipping charges and what not. Also did u guys get the dual tail pipes or the single hidden one. If u guys got the hidden one where does it exit and is it actually hidden?

Phil...
I noticed in your sig that youve raced at ohio valley? When did you do the racing there and did you previously live in KY? I race there quite a bit, just wonderin.

Best E.T. (on street tires) at the VALLEY was 8.17@90mph with a 2.02 60ft.

Twisted,

I lived in KY for 15 months, from 10/99 to 12/00. I lived on Cedarbrook Road. I think I saw you a few times driving around Goshen. What color was your car?

I did race my 383 Z a few times at Ohio Valley. What a cool track. I had a buddy, Mike Little, who had a race car that ran 6 flat out there. He and I would go out and bracket race on Saturday nights. I never lost a bracket race with that car. One night I went through 14 cars only to be DQ'd because I ran some ET Drag slicks in the trophy class!!

My best 60' was a 1.82 and my ET was a 8.39. I lifted on that 8.39 pass though at about 5 car lengths from the finish. My speed was only 75 mph. I have run over 84 mph there many times. I think an 8.20 was about where I was before I left. I now have Hooker SC/LT headers and a carb spacer and soon full roller rockers so I think I may have another tenth or so.....we'll see. I miss racing in that cool dense air!!

I miss that old place!! Work transfer brought me back to Tucson.

If you see Mike Little tell him "Hi ya'll" for me!!

Good Luck!!

SB406, I am not using the Mufflex 4" I-pipe or muffler. I have a single 3" Dynomax Bullet muffler attachment for the street only. I remove this to race at the track.

Woody,

I believe the 2210's work for both the autos and 5 speeds. I have a T-5 in mine. I am not sure how different the T56 is from the T-5, but I hear that many 4th gens have Hooker LTs.

I'd call Hooker for more info or visit their website.

Good Luck!
