More Exhaust Frustration. Pipe size !!
More Exhaust Frustration. Pipe size !!
Day 8 of Exhaust Crisis....OK, the exhaust shop got in the supposed 3 inch intermidiate pipe finally and it is 2 1/2, not 3 inches !! I'm not mad at the guy, maybe I should be, but that's what Maremont sent him. Maybe they're not even Maremont. Who knows. My question is..... since my muffler inlet is 2 1/2 anyway and I don't want a new muffler, will getiing the 2 1/2 intermediate pipe (from cat to muffler) hurt my performance at all ? I figure it would not, since I have always had the 2 1/2 inch muffler inlet, even though at SOME spots, my current intermediate piupe is 3 inches....
Getting tired of running from shop to shop. I don't want to bother ordering by mail since I'd have to have someone install it anyway.
I have the 350 engine with TPI and single exhaust.
I am almost ready to have the 2 1/2 inch put on, just to get the crap over with, and have my car pass inspection finally. Just want to know I will not be losing performance.
Thanks

A pipe will only flow as well as the part with the smallest diameter will let it. Kinda like the chain/weakest link thing. If you plan on upgrading to a larger inlet/outlet muffler some time down the road, then get the 3". Otherwise the 2.5" will be fine.
Just make sure that it's not smaller than that anywhere in the pipe.

Yeah. I was almost going to get a 2.5 inch pipe, but at the last minute I went and measured the new pipe at that crimp near the rear suspension. The crimp brought it down to 2.0 inches. My current pipe has 2 1/4 inches at the same crimp. It must be a conspiracy, man...
Maybe I should just sell the car and get a Metro.... just kidding. My new plan of attack is to use muffler weld on that small hole in the pipe (failed inspection for small hole near end, and loose muffler) and tape up the loose muffler somehow and take the car to a different inspection place and hope. It's going to be easier than getting a decent pipe for my car, apparently.
