To me its only worth doing as a temporary thing, say if your convertor clogs up and you have to be at work the next day. Its pretty simple, just unbolt the exhaust system from behind the convertor and start breaking out the honeycomb material with chisels, screwdrivers, hammers...whatever works for you. When you're finished, start the car and let it run for a minute to blow out any loose pieces, then reconnect the exhaust. If this is going to be a permanent mod, I'd recommend replacing the cat with a straight pipe, or welding a pipe through the convertor body so that it at least "looks" legal. A hollowed out convertor usually sounds pretty bad, esp on decel. A 2.8 V6 is likely going to sound horrible with a gutted cat, and its doubtful if it will give you much improvement...just more noise.

It'll work...at least eliminating the rustling sound you normally get in a gutted cat. I have no idea how it will sound on your car, though...I've only done it on V8s and one turbo V6.

From what I've read gutting a cat, will mess with the flow of the exhaust thru that section, so it's better off having a pipe in it's place.
