Just finished installing Hooker Super Comps

What a pain in the A$$! I sincerely hope the performance gains are worth the effort.

For those who have not done this upgrade yet, have plenty of patience, at least two days to work on it and some nifty tools. I had to use a sawzall to cut off the leafs on the a-arm mounting brackets to clear the headers.

For those of you who have done this, what did you do about the brake line near the passenger side header? It is like 1/8" away from the header. Mine are Jet-Hot coated so I do not know if it will be an issue.

Comments welcome.

I bent my brake lines just enough to get them away from the headers about an inch or so. The whole install was a pita, just like you said.I didn't have to cut anything though.

I am using the Y-pipe from Mufflex. I figured if there is any fitting problems, they are only about 45 minutes away. I have their 4" cat back system and am very pleased with it.

I don't have a facotry starter, I have the CVR mini starter and have zero fitting problems with it. I have heard mixed reviews as to whether or not the stock starter will fit/suffer heat soak.

The headers are 1 3/4" primary, full length headers with a 3" collector.

Will post track results soon to end the all time question of how much better they are than SLP 1 3/4" with 3" random tech cat.

I had to lift my engine a couple of inches to clear those brackets your talking about.
With 2 very good mechanics and I with the car on a lift it took 3 1/2 hours after we finally got the old manifolds off.

From what I hear it seems to be a little easier to install headers on the earlier 3rd gens

How did you route the starter wires? I was thinking about running them under the pan where it crosses the crossmember and then up again.

I have also heard that the eariler 3rd gens had a little more clearance. I wasn not hard to cut the ears though with a sawzall.

They headers were 625 through Jet Hot direct. HOWEVER....i did not pay anything for them due to a shipping error on their part but I will not get into that.

Are you guys still meeting at Perkins?

I think it would be easier to put them into an 82 car because of the clearance in the engine bay that I have been hearing about lately.

Anyone comment on the starter wire routing?

My starter wires are close. I zip tied them back out of the way.

I got my headers in and out wihtout tilting the engine. You have to lift it way up but its possible.

I didnt do anything about the brake lines. Ive had no problems with braking.

I didnt cut off any ears either.

Good luck!

Does the Y-pipe from Mufflex go to the factory catalytic converter location so you can bolt on any catback kit? If not, how does the rest of your guys' exhaust systems work? Anybody have pictures of their Y-pipe setups?

There are pics on Mufflex's website. Here are the pics ...

I also have a pic of my mufflex y-pipe (just the Y-pipe laying on the ground). I bought it used from a guy on CZ28.com and it has a 4"-to-3" adapter that will allow me to mate it to my 3" flowmaster catback. This picture is huge and it will take awhile to download on a 50K connection. The pic is here ...

Hmmmm.... I also have a Flowmaster 3" catback..... it has a three piece intermediate pipe...... I think that it might just work with that Y-pipe....... Does your catback have the three piece intermediate pipe? (mine has one piece welded to the muffler and two pieces that go up to the factory cat location.....) I think that all I would need is a reducer to go down to 3" at the end of the Y-pipe and it would go right into the rest of the catback....... hmmmmm.......

Thanks,
Matt
