Clogged Cat ??

1986 IROC-Z, 305 , 700R4 , 3.23 Rear

Recently the exhaust has taken on a noticably quite tone, kind of a "whoosh" sound. At the same time the power of the car has dwindled greatly. Going uphill the car will shudder and shake around 3000-3500 rpm and won't shift to third until you let off on the gas a little, but normal driving on flat land the transmission shifts fine. Don't want to replace the transmission if the problems lies in the exhaust !!!! Question - would a clogged converter cause problems that you could mis-diagnose as transmission failure ??? These shifting problems only occur under heavy acceleration, is the transmission missing it's shift points because the rpm's aren't getting there fast enough ?

Go hit your cat with a mallet and see if you hear anything banging around inside.

All you need to do is rap on it with a knuckle... unless it's hot, then I'd use a mallet ouch! If there is a rattle then the cat is busted and you need a new one. If it was gutted it would sound hallow. I assume you haven't gutted it though...

just fix it the old fashioned way - rip it off and weld a piece of exhaust pipe in its place! your car will sound meaner and you'll get better gas mileage, too!
