Thinking of Edelbrock Shorty Headers... somebody talk me out of more money...

I was just over at the Edelbrock site looking at the shorty headers designed to bolt straight up to the stock crossover pipe. Is this a viable option when making a one time purchase? Could I bolt this up to a 3" system later down the road with minimal restrictions or should I really get headers designed for a 3" system off the bat?

I may be missing something, but I don't think you're looking on the correct page. Check their "Application Chart for Tubular Exhaust System Headers and Shorty Headers" - you won't see a shorty replacement for factory manifolds on the Camaro/Firebird chart. Just complete systems with y-pipe.

The only manifold replacement shorties they make are for pickups and SUVs.

The only talking out of I'll do is to recommend you getting Hooker 2055's or SLPs instead of Edelbrock. Guess what? Both cost more than TES.

Now guess why...

I have the TES headers and catback system with rpm muffler. It's ok except I keep blowing out collector gaskets about every 1 1/2 months. Gonna get expensive since edelbrock replacements cost 15 bucks from JEGS. I now wish I had just paid more and went with SLP stuff. Oh well I wasted my money I guess I'll just have to stick with these pieces of crap.

Ok, so if they are only for SUV's and the such, does anybody make stock replacements and how do they compare to real headers?

The Hooker 2055's use a ball flange at the collector to y-pipe. It has to be opened up to provide optimum flow, but if it leaks, just dap some muffler putty on it and bolt it back up.

The gaskets to the heads are still cheap, though. Will be getting FelPro or something instead of using the supplied gaskets.

AFAIK, nobody makes manifold replacements that bolt to a factory 3rd gen y-pipe. Your best bet would be to get some takeoff L98 or ZZ4 manifolds. They'll flow better than your 305 parts, but probably still not as good as headers.

Buddy here runs corrected 13.3's through the ZZ3 manifolds (same thing as ZZ4) and dual cats in a full-up street car (smog legal, AC, PS, PW, PL, etc.). So, they can't be all that bad.

Oh yeah, I forgot, he had them extrude honed.
(Edit: Actually, he just told me that he took the diegrinder and opened up the ports to the heads. SLP's going on soon.)

Whatever...

Go with the SLP 1 3/4in shorties, they come with their own Y-pipe. The edlebrock TES shorty's are a complete waste of money!

just get the 3" edelbrock TES's, then put a reducer in front of your cat, then if you want to upgrade the rest to a 3" later on, just take it off, thats what i was gonna do, but then i just got it all

Fireturd350....If you are blowing out those steel composite gaskets.. you have a much bigger problem. They are an OEM donut type of gasket very durable. I have reused mine 3 times and they have been on the car for over 2 yrs with no leaks. It would take a hammer and chisle to cut it.
