I dont think so. Because my friend and I were trying to put on his X pipe and we asked a muffler shop if they could do it. They basscilly laupghed at us and said they didnt want to have a reputation for working on illegal stuff. Thats what happend to us. Hope that helps.

you have a 50/50 chance to tell you the truth, some shops around here will tell you to leave, some don't care, and some will even remove the cat for you. I did all my exhaust myself, but all of my friends have straight pipes on their trucks.

thanks guys. The reason i ask is because my friend just bought a set of headders for his 79 trans am and the headders stop right were the cats are.

Why not just have the muffler shop reposition the cats further back. There's no reason to remove a good cat except to put
in a better one. Make the car perform with the emissions equipment installed.
That's Cool!

Stay away from the brand name shops, they probably won't even talk to you. Just go into some places, act like you don't know there is anything wrong with removing the cats, and somebody will eventually be willing to do it. With my buddies '77 the 3rd shop we went to was will to do the exhaust, but wouldn't touch the headers. I still don't know why NO shop was willing to put headers on the car. (Finally ended up with one of those friend of a friend of a friend deals) Anyway, my point keep asking around, someone will do it eventually.

I called a shop a while back to ask if they would make a y-pipe for me. I told them up front that the cats were off, but I put headers on and that the reason for the need. They said they would make one for me, but they won't put in pipe in place of the cats.

Hey they can be fined up to $5000, I have been turned down everywhere, but if I go 25 minutes south into a differnt county where there is no emissions they will do it there.
