Dual 2.25 or 3 in. catback?

Im thinking about going with the Flowmaster American Thunder 3 in. catback, but im also looking at Hooker, Mac, and Random Tech.

Would cat-back 3 in. be better or dual 2.25 in.? I really want to have Flowmaster 40 series on my car, but I SERIOUSLY doubt dual 3 in. LOL

What would you do?

Heres an idea I have, but i dont know alot about exhaust so i dont know if it would work:

headers-y-pipe-cat-y collector-two pipes going to two mufflers-tips

Get it?

That would work. Run the dual 2.25'' pipes side by side in the stock exhaust location. Follow the stock exhaust routing all the way to the back and somewhere along the lines put mufflers in there... but they must be small. I don't know if flowmster 40 series would fit (BTW, flowmaster 40 series do not have to be ordered with 3'' in/out).

Anyway, I do not know if those will fit very well though (ground clearance) but I am sure two chambered mufflers would fit becuase they are no bigger than the exhaust pipe itself.

Dual 2.25" offers no performance gain over a single 3". Dual 2.5" could however.

flowmaster has a 3 in american thunder kit with dual 3in tips rather then 2.5 if thats what you are looking for.

on a side note the flowmaster gets really loud on those 70+ mph freeways in NC. just got back from fayettville and my ears are still ringing from the drive down and back.

i am looking for something quiter above 2500 rpm for freeway trips. i like flowmaster but if hooker is quiter on the freeway at say 80 mph i might buy it.

For your setup, and the price of converting to duals. I would just go with the Hooker cat-back.

How does the Hooker sound at idle and say 2500rpm on the freeway? I love Flowmasters because of their sound. My dad has Flowmasters on everything he has, but his cars have a built 350, built 383, and a stock 403 BB, so I can't compare his to a 305.

Anybody with a 305...Tell me what you have and how it sounds. I want something loud, but not like drag racing open heads loud either.

At idle it's a nice low rumble, but when you get on it a definate head turner, or even when I cruise thru the college area in 2nd. There is a soundclip of it on this board somewhere.

I definately believe you, Mark...The problem is: You have a 350, I have a 305. Im sure the Hooker would still be a good choice too. I just have some kind of "thing" for Flowmasters. How much is the Hooker? I might end up buying that so my car will sound different. I plan on adding a 3 in. cat, K&N open element, Edelbrock Performer intake, and maybe a new, bigger cam(CompCam 264H). Other than those, I am gonna save up because I would like to have a 67-69 Camaro, or a Chevelle, Malibu, Nova, etc. in the long run.
