My car right now has a 3 inch pipe coming back off the cat but when it goes into the muffler it somehoe changes and the 2 tips coming out of the muffler are like 2 1\4 is there a reason why the guy that use to own my car done that and would there be much of a difference in performance if i went 3 inch the whole way back?also will a camaro exhaust off the newer 4th generation camaros fit on a 3rd generation?

More than likley there's an adapter to make the change from 3in to 2 1/4th. If not it's the straight 3in over the 2 1/4 muffler inlet. If it is the stock Muffler. Advantage is back pressure. Helps for low end Tq, not high end though! Also it's coming out dual soo... you really have a 4 1/2 exhaust out of the muffler. But you only have 3in from the cat to muffler... Also then from the exhaust manifold to the cat/y pipe.
However it shouldn't hender performance that much.. if anything go to a 3in all the way.. More than enough and may be too much...

ya, the 2 1/4 tips wont hurt u any, as 92 camaro said.. heck, look at the stock y-pipe, (or t pipe
) the drivers side is alot smaller then where the two sides connect and smaller then the rest of the exhaust.

Assuming the 2-1/4" and 3" dimensions are OD, and pipe wall is 1/16" for each, dual 2-1/4" pipes will have a flow area of 7.09 sq in., while the single 3" will be 6.49 sq in. So, the dual 2-1/4" pipes aren't going to hurt a 3" system (assuming boundry layer losses in the 2-1/4's doesn't cancel out the greater flow area).
4th gen style exhausts are available for 3rd gens, but 4th gens won't fit directly.
