Single 3.5"

Hey y'all, Iwas just thinking, would it make more sense to run a single 3.5 inch pipe all the way down, instead of everyone trying to run duals. I think that if you had a 3" y-pipes off the headers and the ran the 3.5" down to a single muffler it would be cheaper than trying to run duals, would flow plenty and would help out on ground clearance. Just a thought.

I've never seen (not saying it doesn't exist) a muffler with a 3.5" inlet. That could cause some problems.

There are a lot of 4" mufflers that you could use, but then ya may as well use 4" pipe. Mufflex makes a kit like that, so evidently it's been thought of.

Dual exhaust systems don't belong on these cars. They just don't have the room and most of time they sound like crap. A good single outlet Mufflex performs just as good and will sound killer. Good luck!

Hooker makes the aerochamber with 3.5" inlet/outlet. Which is actually what gave me the idea in the first place. Also Dynomax bullet mufflers come with a 3.5" inlet/outlet, but I don't feel like getting pulled over for noise violations constantly. Other than the Hookers, I don't know of any other's with 3.5" either.

Flowmaster makes a 3.5 in the "Top ten shootout" 30 series.

i was thinking of something similar with 4.5 inch, maybe ovalize it where it would be under the floor pan, that would flow like a sombitch.

doubt it would go over the axle though. anyone have 4.5 inch exhaust?

you'd do more bad than good with a 4.5" exhaust unless you are making ~1000HP.

You exhaust looks awsome, but I wouldnt say that duals have no place on these cars. I have duals on my car and would be willing to bet i have at least as much clearance as you. The reason I say so is the lowest point on my exhust is under the tranny crossmember and there is probably only a centemeter between my exhuast and the crossmember. I imagine that is your lowest point on your exhust right? I can also say that with me and by brother in the car it doesnt scrape coming into the driveway or over speed bumps at all and we are not small. I way around 300 and he is probably over 250.

On a side note, I have seen a test on a ~350 rwhp LT1 that went from a full 4" mufflex exhaust off of hooker lt's to a dual 2.5 w/ x pipe and gained in between 10 and 15 hp. I do think that the mufflex is one of the best single exhausts around and yours is probably at least as good if not better, but I think that there is more than one way to go. I just dont like the idea of all of the exhaust being stuck into one pipe and having the pulses having to struggle over which one goes first. Sound clips in sig.

I did the 4" single & found that it was a SOB to get it to clear going up over the rear axle. Scapped that & now I am fabbing up a dual 3" setup. I am building a 3 " y pipe (to go around a Spohn crossmember, driveshaft hoop, torque arm combo) from a set of Hooker LTs into a Flowmaster y collector, 4" to right before the rear axle, another y collecter splitting back to dual 3" over the axle & two Spintech Pro Street muffs at the back bumper. I had to mod the mounting of the tie bar brace, lowering it a little to clear the dual 3" pipes. I also had to lose the heat shield at the fuel tank to gain a little more clearance.

how is that rega?

personally, im looking for close to 800 flywheel, but i honestly believe that a single 4.5 inch pipe would flow fairly well, without being overkill.

dont mistake me for someone putting this on a stock 305, i think it would work quite well.

A 4.5" pipe may work when you actually have that much power but I wouldnt do it before that. A single 4" has about the same area as dual 3" I believe and I havent done the math but I would guess that a 4.5 would be close to dual 3.5" pipe. That is a lot of pipe. Its going to be a a pain to do with good ground clearance too.

You can buy pre-fabricated bolt on exhausts in 3.5" and 4" varieties, with either Flowmaster or Spintech (my pref) mufflers, single or dual outlets, at www.mufflex-performance.com

You're only a compliment to what I said onebadwagon. I don't know exact numbers, was only speaking of ballpark figures.
