Valve Cover Breathers

I am not sure if this belongs on this board but...

I have two Mr Gasket Chrome valve cover breathers and I was wondering what is needed to install these...apart from the obvious "pull out the PVC filter and push in the chrome ones" ... the PVC filters have vacuum on them so will I just have to disconnect there vaccuum lines and block it off or am I way off base here?

I am at a disadvantage as my car is stored and I can't tinker with it....just looking for ideas.

You will need to cap the vacume lines. Plus you will be cleaning your engine more often, with the PCV all the crankcase vapor get sucked into the intake air, with breathers it will coat your engine in a thin film of oil.

Is there any real benefit to using valve cover breathers? Everytime I see a "performance engine" in a car 99% of the time you see valve cover breathers.

I was told there is, but think about it how much could it really help. I have one breather and the PCV hooked up on the other side.

You've got TPI... there's no reason to remove those. Now if you were TBI switching to open element THEN you could start thinking about it.

The benefit to running a crankcase breather that has an open element is that it allows the cankcase to vent pressure out into the atmosphere freely which saves on gaskets, rings, and allows the engine to rev slightly smoother, since the crankcase will basically not build any pressure at all. There is no reason not to do this mod on a TPI engine versus any other type of engine. Now, the install of a breather and the subsequent capping of the vacuum lines that used to go onto the breather line on the side of the TB of a MAF system will cause a few small problems with the system as it is programmed to have that small amount of air come into the air stream behind the MAF and it is calculated into the PROM. So when you cap the line and install an open breather, you will be causing a small fluctuation in the air coming into the engine. But I can also say that I have an open breather on the passenger side VC of my engine and have installed it on many other cars without having any problems. Basically I have found that whatever effect that this 'mod' has on the air coming into the engine is not enough to cause any major problems. But then again, I burn my own PROMs......
