Rookie questions about headers-exhaust systems to pass emissions

OK guys.......i'm sure it's been asked a thousand times, and iv'e seen hundreds of postings.....but if someone with a similar set up could please respond; I have an 87 LG4 T/A, stock Rochester 4-bl carb. I need to pass emissions test in Taxxa.....er, I mean Massachusetts. I want to put on Hooker headers (2055 ??) and an appropriate exhaust system. I would also like to install everything as painless as possible, especially would like a drop-in-fit !! If any of you guys have done this to your own F-Body and has a similiar car to mine, would appreciate a responce. I under stand what a "cat " is....but what is a "cat-back" ??? i'm new to this group and am just learning. Please Help !!!! Thanks !! Fakeyankee.

hey dude, whats happening....

i think SLP makes hedders for your car that would still allow it to pass emissions, but im not positive on that...

and a cat-back exhaust is when you have both pipes flowing into one big muffler, instead of a muffler on each pipe, and since you have virtually the same car as me, i have a catback exhaust and yours should too...exept my exhaust is chillin in the dump!

(ok, now that i think about it, the two pipes dont nessesarily need to meet into one muffler to qualify as cat-back exhaust)

Well, if you understand what a "CAT" is, then understanding what a catback is should be no problem. It's basically the exhaust system from the Cat back. So every thing behind the converter.

As far as "drop-fit", everything is supposed to be drop fit, now if it actually drops in or not that's a differnet story. Some people had issues, some didn't. Remember, the engine and engine compartmetn of a TBI car and TPI car are almost identical so doingthe exhaust will be the same. You will just need to take your time. As for emissions, as long as the headers have AIR tubes you should be fine. But this also depends on what they look for and need when going through inspections.

If you have any more questions just holla!

Have fun
