82...Hooker Catback...HELP!!!
Ok the exhaust on my car is in rough shape so I just have it dumped underneath the car now...This summer I am swapping in a built 350 with headers and 3 inch all the way back...So my question is...Can I get the hooker 3 inch catback now and install it from my 82 LG4 cat. I know some hangers will have to be made but will it work with my present y pipe and cat with a reducer pipe until I do the motor swap? Or will I need to get all my stuff from a later camaro for it to bolt up until I get th headers and 3 inch y pipe and 3 inch cat...The 82 LG4 setup is weird so I was just wondering

If you can, I'd wait to do the engine swap; then put on headers, cat, cat-back for '86-'90 TPI single-cat application. You could do the cat & cat-back now, adapting the current y-pipe to the new cat (not the other way around), but most any other option would require modification to things you don't want modified in the end.

See the thing is...My dad offered to split the cost of a catback with me if I fix it right...I was just going to leave it dumped underneath unil the motor swap but I figured I should take this oppurtunity before I move out next year. So you think I should get a high-flow cat and this catback and get a shop to modify my exhisting y pipe? Right now I have a gutted cat...Is there any cars with a factory 3 inch cat I can gut? Or should I just get an aftermarket high-flow unit?

The '86-'90 TPI single-cat is 3" from the factory. Exhaust shops and junk yards get real funny about cats, though. Something about hefty fines from the Feds. I've had more than one shop refuse to have anything to do with a cat that I brought in. You might be able to buy a used cat from a private party, but most likely not from a junk yard.
If you installed the cat & cat-back, cut off the y-pipe where the two sides come together, and ask a shop to attach them to the cat, they might do it. But, you just never know.
The nice thing about doing aftermarket headers/y-pipe/cat/cat-back all at the same time is you can bolt them all together yourself. Would be great if you could convince dad to go halves with you on that idea. The motor swap isn't really part of that equation, except it's easier to install headers when the engine is out.

hello, i just did a motor swap in my 90 IROC and i believe what thefive7kid is saying is a very good idea... i did the exact same thing on mine i bough Edelbrock headers with the 3" y-pipe and a catco converter (3' in, 3" out) and the Hooker catback for the 86-92 f-body, total came to like $720 thats a bit pricey but i bought the headers before i did the engine swap and it made things very easy and i just bought the catback last week, if you spread it out its not too bad
if you have a little mechanic skills its not too hard to tackle yourself, i'd never pay a shop to do exhaust work again (least not on a third gen i know them by heart now) headers were a very easy install at least with the engine out....hope this helps
