ok so how do you convince exhaust shops to hang duals in areas where no inspections or anything exist ? i have tried in the past such as on a 79 caprice and they said no if no cat converter

ive heard about signing a waiver or something, and also of a mileage rule of around exemption over around 100,000 miles

whats anyone know about this ? would it be state by state or nation wide thing ?

 

Do you have headers? I did my own exhaust, and just had it welded at a shop, but they told me that since I had headers it would be considered an offroad vehicle and they could have done whatever I wanted for exhaust. I have also heard of people taking the plates off and taking the car in on a trailer and telling them it is an offroad only car and some places will do it.

What about the inspection sticker in the window?

I live in a decently strict area for emissions...and I've used 2 muffler shops and neither one had much restraint to do some illegal work for me lol.

 

No emission checks here, but it is still illegal because it is federal law not state. The state just inforces it.

we dont have inspections either, we have nothing, we also dont have a lot of shops either, we dont even have a single tranny shop let alone soemthing as wild as rear end shops or other things, i have yet to see such things,.

being that this is a federal thing, i wonder if there are some exemptions after a certain mileage, or if it would help that i replaced a blown up factory V8 with a good working V8 and i got the car with no exhaust at all under it and its not gonna have factory correct manifolds(old `60s ram horns)

bet could find federal exhaust codes online

but dunno how or where

i like the offroad on trailer idea, i kinda thought about that last night, and i was told by a local auto repair guy about signing a waiver form, and he makes it out to be no big deal at all and according to him any place will do this, but i have had trouble in the past trying to get a shop to do anything on an originally cat equipped vehicle, he is very good at wrenching on vehicles but i dont think he has the brightest filament in his light bulb..

Federal law doesn't have an exceptions like that. If you drove it to the shop, on the street, it must be a street car. If it's licensed it's a street car. Cannot remove the cat from a cat equipped car. The shop cannot work on the exhaust if the cat is missing and will remain missing when it's done(if they work on the exhaust it must meet federal standards). The shop would be in some **** if somehow the feds found out it didn't have a cat, tried to bust the owner, then the owner gave out the shop name and receipt. However, some shops are nice about stuff like that. You might find a shop worker that can do some 'after hours' work, pay cash, no receipt. It would be difficult to get the shop busted without proof they did the work. Also, it's less likely a 'big name' shop would do some illegal work, compared to some personally owned shops.

 

so i if leave it stripped gutted no interior or front nose and fenders and maybe take the taillights out real quick then trailer it to a shop then i bet i could have it done then by saying its gonna be dirt track even though its not really gonna be,

well i fi ever find a fan and manifolds and radiator and a freaking 80-up 305 engine ever..


cant find any of the stuff that i can afford anyways,,

after i do then i can have this done finally, side by side manifold duals,

Alot depends on the person you go to. Some guys won't touch stuff like that, and others could care less. I have had 2 cars to this guy in town that has taken my exhaust from the headers back with no questions asked. I've also sent several people to him and they've had no problems with him either. But there are about 4 other shops in town that flat out refuse to touch them. Just have to find the right shop. Luckily, I have.

 

tell them you'll pay in cash too....usually helps, thats all it took for my buddy...

 

with my rx7 when I wanted to get the headers put in a lot of people turned me down because it is a rotary (even though putting headers on is just about the same as a piston motor)
but found a few places that would do it except for what I showed them ( header and presilencer where sitting in the back of my car) would remove all 3 cats
but I did find a few shops around me that where willing to do it knowing full well that the cats would be removed and the air injection system wouldn't work and that I would not be able to fit a cat in there at all or get the air system to work at all


it was just a matter of driving around or calling around a few places in town and having one of them finally saying yes or if one seemed a little iffy just talk to them for a bit get a little buddy buddy with them

you know talk to them even more so if they like american muscle bring up some things of you that would fit with them. you know chum it up lie out your a<x>ss if you need to but it can happen it just takes a little time and effor to get the guys to be nice and say oh what the hell I guess I can do this for you one time

 

I agree with the other responses. You just have to make friends. All depends on who ya know. We don't have any e-checking where I live, and there are 2 shops within 15 miles from me that I know very well, they have no problems at all putting any type of exhaust on any year car converters or not. One is getting ready to put duals with no cats on my father 91 truck. But we are all car buddies around here.
I just visited one the other day to make me a piece of 3 inch pipe so I could can the converter on the Iroc. He knew what it was for but didn't care. Get in with some good car guys, that will help alot. Larry.

 

when i had the exhaust put on my monte carlo. he told me he could anything past where the cat goes. even though i had long tube headers i just put on 2 pieces of pipe about 2 feet long that he prebent for me. he told me it wasn't breaking the rules just slitly bending them.

 

The term "race car" goes a long way...

 

Back that up with gutted interior (well, at least remove the passenger and back seats), no license plate, and hauled to the shop on a trailer, and that should fly.

You run in a "mufflers required" class, of course...

 

Pay them straight up with cash and dont tell anyone that they did it for you

 

my advice is go to a small town shop that is privately owned, this is what i did when i got my hooker put on and without saying anything he actualy asked me if i minded if my cat happened to "get caught on the lift and fall off" when i told him i didnt mind, all he said was "darn low cars anyway " and as i guessed when i went to pick it up there was no recept
