Catalytic Converter War
Interestingly enough, adding a Arvin 3" direct fit cat to my system (in place of the hollowed out 3" gm one) has done a few things:
1) Made the car about 2% quieter
2) No more backfires on downshift, decel
3) Seems to run a million times better.
This is w/out air pump. I'm hooking up a 4th gen electric air pump (off the ECM) this week.
Keep the cat folks.

I agree but do you need the AIR pump for emissions testing. If not just forget it. Your ride should pass a sniffer with out it.
