alright guys, i'm swapping in an L96 out an 84 monte carlo ss. I am wondering what headders i should use. i going to run no emissions, and i want the install to be fairly easy. i was looking at the hooker competitions, but which ones would i use. The ones for the monte, or the ones for the camaro?

if its going into a 82-92 camaro i would definitely use camaro headers. no others would fit. if its for a monte i would use monte headers. i would buy the hookers.

 

Defenitely gotta go with the camaro headers. Use the Hooker 2210's for unbeatable results and ease of install. Use a LT1 starter to make it real easy, plus decrease weight.

 

I assume you mean L69.

Small block Chevy heads are all basically the same at the exhaust ports (from the factory, anyway - there is an additional bolt hole on some later ones). So, the header flanges will all be the same.

The difference comes in how the tubes need to be routed to clear the frame and drivetrain. So, you buy headers to fit the chassis (if you were putting a Buick engine into a Camaro, that's a whole different ballgame).

Hooker 2210's are long-tube headers with 1-3/4" primary tubes. For an otherwise stock L69, they are over-kill, and will probably kill low-end torque. They ain't cheap, either. Hedman makes 68460 long-tubes with 1-5/8" primaries. Probably a better choice if you want long-tubes.

If shorties are okay by you, the Hooker 2460's or Hedman 68470's are good low-cost choices.

Since you say "no emissions", I assume that means no cat. Be prepared to have some exhaust fabrication done. That'll probably cost you.

 

thanks guys, i'll probably end up going with the hooker comps. All the exhaust fab i can do myself. the only thing i will have to fab though is the pipe for where the cat used to be. i'm buying the hooker cat back to go with those nice hooker headers. Fun for me.

 

Which "nice Hooker headers"? The only one that comes with a y-pipe is the 2055, which are the more expensive, emissions-legal type. The 2460 will need a y-pipe fabricated to get to the old cat location (doesn't connect to the existing y-pipe).
