reducing sound X-pipe vs. H-pipe
What will tone down the exhaust sound more a H or X pipe? I plan on running duals headman long tubes_headman x-tensions_X or H pipe_dynomax bullet mufflers_turn downs in that order.I know it will be loud but if I could tone it down it would be great.Anybody use or hear any of those inserts they sell? I don't have any help as of yet, but I know what you mean. I just installed Hedman long tubes, a small section of 3" pipe, and 2 Dynomax bullets. This setup is very LOUD! I've tried to install a pair of turn downs, but with the 3,800 stall converter, even cruising at 30MPH is deafining. What a cop magnet! Within the next couple of weeks, I will install Hedman X-tension tubes which are 2 1/2" which might choke the engine back slightly on the street. (They can always be removed at the strip.) To these I will add an H-pipe and 2 spintech mufflers with the turndowns. If this thread is still alive by then, I'll let you know if it's quieter.
If anyone else has any ideas for quieting down an over the top street engine, please let us know. Has anyone else experienced a noise reduction from installing an X-pipe or H-pipe?

HEY the x-pipe conversation. An X-Pipe will definitley quiet it down,5-10 decibels which is signifigant. Also an x-pipe Sweetens the sounds as it will resemble 180 degree headers (kinda makes it sound like it's revving higher when you stand on it). Also an X-pipe tends to boost torque across the power band.An H-Pipe probably will not signifigantly reduce the noise as the idea behind them was to balance backpressure, which without mufflers there really isn't much. Also on a side note if you get the exhaust pipe exit out from under the car it will make a huge difference as to the interior noise level. Those turndowns are bouncing the sound off the ground and then slamming it into the bottom of the car which is then in turn becoming a big drum and resonating.Love that sound but ears start ringing after about 10 minutes of it.Try the X-Pipe and full length pipe, all the way out.Might be kinda hard but sounds like you guys are into trying new stuff. The X-Pipe and turn downs would help the noise from farther away but would probably still be unbearable in the car.Even with 2 chamber flowmasters and turn downs I had to put earmuffs on my kids when they rode with me.That was hooker super comps through a Doctor Gas X-Over into two chamber Flowmasters dumping at the rear axle,3" front to back.Oh yeah that exhaust was on my 67 GTO with a 406 Pontiac, but still, same kinda airflow.

Thanx for the info. I just might investigate the possibility of getting an x-pipe. It's always nice to hear from folks with actual experience. The interior noise isn't quite an issue for me, but I'm deeply concerned with the eterior noise.

I guess I'm just lucky. I run headers, x-pipe and dual bullitt mufflers with turn downs. I ran the pipe until the real end and then put the turn downs at a 45 degree angle. The sound is great and its not that loud. I've heard loud mouth exhausts that were louder than mine. Also I can still hear my stereo with ease inside the car.
