to cat, or not to cat...

my Trans Am currently has a set of Edelbrock 6872 TES headers/y-pipe, and a Flowmaster American Thunder cat back system. they are currently connected with a single 3" pipe rather than a cat. the car is pretty loud, and i'd like to quiet it up a bit. will there be any significant decrease in hp with adding the cat? i plan on finding the highest flowing cat i can, does anyone know where i might find such a cat?

Look on www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com. They have hi flo cats. A hi flow cat might quieten up a LITTLE bit, and it won't really affect your horsepower so

Good hi-flo cats will only take a few hp and they're quiet it a bit.

I have the exact same exhaust setup as you and i had a single 3inch in/out random tech cat. i picked up two tenths in the quarter mile when i cut the cat out. The car feels like it pulls a lot harder without it. those differences were after i put a cam in it, so it might not make much difference with the stock cam.

stock cam? whats that? must be some sort of mythological part, because i've never seen one in my garage.

Cat Idea

Weld flanges (homade is fine) before and after where the cat would be. Drill the flanges to accept the cat. Now, make a "Direct flow" pipe the same length as the cat with its own flanges. This way, you folks out there who have to pass the "Sniffer" test, can use the cat for inspection, and the straight pipe other times. To reduce sound, use pipe about an inch bigger with reducers on the ends(about 15bux apair). Try fitting up A few diff types, it may help to visit a muffler shop to check out some in-line muffler designs... it's pretty easy, and can be fun changing the sounds

i know the feeling. basically the way i fund alot of my stuff is by buying/selling parts. i started when i was 16 and i wrecked my first truck. i bought a complete running parts truck, used the parts off of it that i needed and sold/traded off the parts i didnt need(for parts that i could sell) altogether, and within 2 weeks i might add, i fixed my truck for -$32. and i still to this day have bits and pieces from that truck laying around that i could still make money off of.
