Never heard a F*rd that sounded better than a Chevy!

Is your muffler the 80 or 40 Series, etc., does it have dual outlets?

some one said that it was the firing order that made a big diffrence in the sound, also they have factory H pipes which eqaulizes the exhuast out better then our cars (someone slap me if Im wrong-could be a bunch of BS!).

A dual set-up with an x-pipe or h-pipe makes the main difference in sound. Put a single 3" on a mustang and it would sounds a lot more like our cars. Performace is roughly the same so don't worry.

True duals on Chevys sound really great. If you wanna step up the sound alot more you could do that.

Yep, the crossover pipe is what makes it sound like it does. I too heard the firing order does something, but i think that may be BS.

And yes, true-duels on a chevy is sweet sounding. Especially when its a 406

For some reason, Camaros don't sound as good as almost anything. I have tried and tried to figure it out. My 89 s10 with a tpi v8 has Flowmaster 40 series mufflers with 2.5 inch pipes and no crossover- it sounds like my freakin' race car. My daily driver tbi fullsize pickup has daul 2.5 inch pipes with random cats and flowmasters and sounds awesome. My camaro can't seem to get the right tone. One thing that helped though, and I haven't heard of it yet on the exaust postings, is put turn downs out of the normal crossflow mufflers. Mustangs that sound bad almost all have turn downs. It does make it EXTREMELY loud in the car, but I have yet to get pulled over (for noise). Hope this helps.

H pipe is the only reason it sounds better. put that on your fbody and see if the stang sounds better... no way man, not even close. and whats the deal with the flowdisaster mufflers? spend your money on better mufflers man. or better yet, packs. flows so common and dont even sound great. i rather my dynomax race series ultra flow over a flowdisaster anyday. another awesome muffler are the spintec's....WOW those are great

Duals and a x-over pipe of some form is a must to achieve mustang-esque sound... http://www.deadbird.org/swin/index.php?showtopic=9
I'm getting closer to the tone/loudness I want. I thing the next muffler I make will be 'the one'.
GM, ford or chrystler (sp?), 3 motors of the exact same size/build/power with the exact same exhaust will sound 95% the same. Firing order will be the other 5% of sound.
Pipe off the muffler will affect tonal quality more then anything. The longer the tail pipe off the muffler is, the more 'hollow' sound you will get. Even with a single exhaust which is why trucks have such a different tone than our cars.

I'm not bragging but my Z28 sounds pretty mean....even compared to a mustang. When I open the switch to the exhaust cut out....(I can tune it electronically) it sounds like an old muscle car.....straight headers dumped right beneath the seat... good enough for me

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I find that Mustangs produce a much "sweeter" tone than our cars. Now, our cars can sound mean, but they don't have that sweet tone. I guess I really can't explain it. How about we get some sound files in here?

Has anyone ever thought of producing a sound library of various exhaust systems on different cars taken from the same locations?

I think I'll take mean over the other option.

I agree mustangs do have a real nice growl tone to them. But IMO they do not sound that great at Wot.

IROC... that is extremely similar to the sound of my car at cruising/throttle speedswith the only exception of once my car gets into the 3k+ range it starts sounding similer to open exhaust (minus the hillbilly chopped/rusted off muffler tone). Loudness/open exhaust sound is proportionate (sp?) to throttle position.
