Air managment on cat ???

I have a 91 Camaro RS with 305 TBI .I hate having the catalytic convetor on there. But I notice the air managment tube coming out the side of the catalytic conv. I read in one of the camaro performance books that if you take the catalytic conv off the computer does not understand why its not there and you lose power because the computer can't find it. Since this is a book sold by many perfomance catalogs I have to believe it.
What I want to know is can I bypass this system or get ride of it all together with out losing any performance.

I appreciate the advice. I think I will go ahead and just take the cat. conv. off. As heavy as the car is every little bit of weight I can take off will help. And there is nothing better than the sound off a V8 with no cat. convs.
