Exhaust Leak Near Header

I have a very distinct exhaust leak on the passenger side header. I think it is coming from the rear of the motor because every week or so I have to go out and retighten the bolts on that side. My uncle (who built the motor), suggested that I get some silicone sealer and seal up both sides of the gasket.

What should I do to stop this leak???

Steve

I would replace the header gasket. You can get pretty decent Mr gasket ones at most auto parts stores. You could also order a dead soft copper or aluminum set that would cure your problems. I would also look into getting a set of locking bolts. They make a couple of differnt kinds. They make some that have a locking tab on the bolt head and they also have some that have a screw within the bolt that expabnds and keeps the bolts from backing out. I have the stage 8 lockers but I could not use the tabs because they were to close to the primaries to work. So because of that reason I would recomend the other type. DO NOT USE a sealant. Your exhaust temps are around 1200*F and any off the shelf sealant will not last. That is just a bandaid to the problem.

I have Hedman Headers so I think I have to get that specific gasket. I won't be able to get them until this weekend but I will probably end up replacing them anyway. This will be the 3rd set that I put on there and it seems like I just cant get it to seal right anyway.

With the locking header bolts, how do you get them off if you want to??? My uncle seems to suggest NOT getting them but if I'm having such a problem with them I might just look into them.

Thanks for the help!

If the tabs are the tabs that hold the bolt from turning (not the clips), you can grind them down to make them fit between the primary and the bolt head. I've done this on two sets now and they all hold fine.

Those Breslin locking bolts are great... haven't used them myself (yet) but I know people who have. They work great.

I wouldn't use silicone to seal up a header gasket.. the temps are just too high. Get a new set of header gaskets and you should be fine. I've heard aluminum header gaskets work pretty well, but they are expensive.

Ultra copper works fine.
