Questions on replacing exhaust
Questions on replacing exhaust
I need to replace everything from my cat all the way back on my 86 ta. I have never replaced or even touched an exhaust system so I had a few questions.
1) Do I have to weld everything in place or can I just clamp all the components? I ask because I don't have access to a welder.
2) How would I go about cutting the pipe that goes into the cat? Is there a special tool or do I just use hacksaw?
3) Any special tricks or suggestions to make this easier?
The whole system is rotted out and won't pass inspection/emissions. I really would like to do it to save the $$
Any advise I would appreciate...also, I want to maintain the stock setup so any idea's on where to get this stuff the cheapest would be great.
Thanks

It wouldn't cost too much to just have the stock exhaust replaced by an exhaust shop, but if you want to do it yourself, I would say check an autoparts store for a stock setup. I believe Advance Discount Autoparts has them.
You could use a hack saw to cut the pipe, but it takes some time to do it that way. The best way would be a swazall. You can rent one pretty cheap if you don't have one.
You can clamp the joints if you want. The best way would be to weld them though to insure that it doesn't leak any.
You may want to go ahead and replace the cat also while you are under there. If it's the original exhaust it would be a good idea.

A cut-off disc with an angle ginder works well, too. I got mine for $30 at the local Home Depot. You might want to check some exhaust shops around you. I got a great deal mine locally, bigger pipes and cat free.
