funky exhaust
funky exhaust
Ok guys, need an honest opinion here. Im just finishing my new engine swap, and am just about out of cash (you know how it is). I have a healthy and very cammed 350 and want to make a lot of noise. My stock V6 exhuast just isnt gonna flow enough for the beast and I see exhuast coming in the next 2-3 months. The question is this: What if I just run a couple foot of 3in pipe off the ypipe and put like a 24 in turbo (tube style) and run pipe to the back axle and put a turndown? I can do all this in my garage real easy for just the cost of the pipe and muffler. I know its like going to the trailor park, but, it may be necessity. Has anyone ever heard a setup like this, and if so, what did it sound like?

i had a pair of longtubes a while back and i took dual 2-1/4" pipes to two glasspacks and turn downs right before the axle..."very little ground clearance" the racoon said!
I thought about that myself, but i just cant think of the plans to make it very easily. i have a craftsman 110 wire welder. Im pretty good, can weld most things. I thought about taking the 2.25 tailpipes that i have and finding a split that would let me take the 3in pipe to two 2.25 ir 2.5 and then hook it all up. i dont know, just have to see if i can manage it. Did you have a shop bend the pipes to go over the axle? or did you run one pipe over the axle? If you had a picture it would be great.
I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow while I'm thrashing on this thing. I have long tubes so my I pipe ends near the middle of the doors, so yours may need a couple more bends than mine.
I just went to Inland Truck Parts (look in yellow pages under heavy trucks) and bought three 90* bends and one 60* bend plus five feet of 3.5" straight tubing. I used about half that.
Run the intermediate pipe to the rear axle, where you weld on the 60* elbow, which attaches to the 90* elbow, which attaches to the muffler, then another 90 points it out the back. I put on a turndown so my car just about looks like a V6. Unfortunately I bought a race bullet so only a complete ignoramus would ever be fooled by this car.
Edit: if you want the dual tailpipe look you just need to buy a muffler that's designed that way. I know Dynomax makes one that's quiet and works great.
