3" cat wont seal on y-pipe

Hi guys,

About a month or two ago I put the hooker 2055's and hooker 3" catback on my car, along with a direct replacement cat. Everything bolted up nicely, except the slip-fit part of the cat will only slide onto the y-pipe about an inch. I can get the clamp to seal it for a little bit, but it quickly developes an exhaust leak.

What solution I have for making a good seal? Do I need to get it welded? I'm not sure if I want to because I was thinking of putting some type of off-road pipe in its place until next emissions inspection.

Buy a lap joint exhaust clamp from Dynomax thru Summit Racing. They aren't listed in the catalog (the butt joint clamps are) but I use them and they're great. the part number is listed in my post below. Here's a pic of them from this thread:

you could also get a pipe expander (take it to a muffler shop) to make it slip in further. However, i prefer the stainless band style clamps because they don't rust and they allow easy removal.

Wow thanks. I called up Lordco last night (they carry Walker) for part number 33272 and a location had it. Very impressed with how well it fits and no more exhaust leak (at least from that spot). It seems to be a very tight seal when it clamps together so I think it'll stay together.

Very slick. This part should be recommended to anyone doing headers and a catback with the direct-fit cat.

For future reference, if anyone should need it, they are also called band clamps and are carried by most truck shops & repair locations. Usually in 3" sizes and up. Anytime you need that big diameter and bigger you can try there.

That's the great thing about using these style clamps. They don't put a groove in the tubing like a regular clamp and should you need to pull it all apart, it comes apart nicely and with no binding.
