2 Cat to single ???

I am wondering if it is possible to go from a duel cat set up to a Y-piped single cat on our cars. I have the duel rifght now with 2 air lines , 1 line into 1 cat. I would liek to get ride of 1 cat and use the Y pipe but im not sure if thats possible or if theres a way to route the air into 1 cat.

It's definitely do-able and I know some members here have done it. I would recommend looking at diagrams of the exhaust and A.I.R. systems for both single and N10 exhaust. Do a search.

Off-hand What's Different?
  • cat hanger
  • A.I.R. tube is split in Y
  • Heat shielding
  • intermediate pipe
  • Y-pipe from manifolds

If you are adding headers, aftermarket cat, and a catback and do not wish to run the dual cat system then it's okay to switch.

However in your stock state of (no mods), the dual cat is superior, so why are you switching? What are trying to accomplish?

Well basically i been kicking around getting headers for a long time. One of my cats has a loose chunk floating around in it now and it needs replacing. So i was trying to figure out what i wanted to do about it.

1. Replace both cats
2. Replace both cats with a single cat.
3. Break down and buy some freaking headers and decide on singal or duel cat set up.

I had to replace my entire exhaust system from the y-pipe to the tips. I originally had the SLP dual cat 1.75" header setup with 2 cats and a flowmaster catback. To switch to single cat I just had to replace the air hose, get a y pipe for an SLP single cat header kit, get a single cat catback, and I used a generic 3" cat with some custom piping. I would recommend switching because it is a more elegant and cheaper route. Cats have improved since 1989, so the single cat system will perform the same if not better than a dual cat setup. In your case I'd say get a single cat header setup (hooker 2055 as a suggestion), and a bolt in 3" cat replacement section for a single cat car (or a universal with some custom pipe work like I have), and then a single catback of your choice depending on your sound preference. If you want to see how mine is setup, click on the video link in my signature.

Thats what i wanted to know. Where did you buy the air hoses that have the Y pipe in them? Also can you make a y junction in the existing piping? Can you just purchase a air fitting set up for a single cat car and use that? Thanks for the help btw

Your stock AIR pipes that run to the cat have a "Y" split before they reached the cats. It is a single pipe before this. See attached picture. To change to single cat you would need to fabricate a single pipe extension to the new cat.

Here's a better illustration of your dual-cat system.

Ok i see what you mean now, i didnt know they were together at any point i thought they were seperate the whole time. Does anyone know if the single cat vehicles air lines would work in this case? or would it be easier to have someone fab something like this up?
