cat-back for '83

I am having one H*** of a time finding a cat-back system for my car. Everything says it fits like 85 and up. Why won't these systems fit on my '83 w/crossfire injection?

never mind, I think I'm just going to have the shop fab up a custom exhaust. I'm replacing everything from headers to tips, so should I just use 3" for everything and call it a day or do I need to go smaller on some stuff since my engine only puts out 175 HP stock ( and pretty much stock it will stay ). Finally, do the tailpipe sizes really matter? I found the tips I want but they have a 2.5 in inlet. is this a problem?

This is what I am ordering for my 83 Z28 LG4? It is the same for Cross-fire.

no one can tell me if three inches is too big? I found a set of hooker headers for my car and it says they have 3" collector... does this mean I'd have to use 3 inch exhaust? and what about the tips... the tips I want have a 2.5" inlet- will it matter if I use a smaller tailpipe so the tips fit?

It's very simple, really. Get an entire system for '86-'90 TPI single cat application. Hooker 2055 headers, Catco 9118 cat, and whatever cat-back you want that is intended for that application.

3" won't be too big for your system.

Providing that the inlet size of the 2.5" tips you want is ID, they should slide right onto 2.5" tailpipes(which are OD).

I'm guessing you don't want to replace your entire exhaust system at this time, just headers and Y-pipe? If that's the case, to keep the smaller-than-3" cat and cat-back that you have now, you'd need to weld a reducer onto the end of the Y-pipe so it tapers down to the size of the cat's inlet. Then when you have more time and money(if that's an issue at this time), you can add a new 3" cat and cat-back system later.

And if you go 3" eventually, only a few, like Random Technology, use dual 3" tailpipes. Most 3" systems use dual 2.5" tailpipes. So if those tips work on the 2.5" tailpipes you have now, they'll obviously work on the new ones when you get them.

And no, a 3" system is not too big. It's excellent.

no, I'm doing the whole thing exhaust system now while I do have the money. I was wondering about having the 2.5 inch tailpipes with a 3-inch exhaust, tho. Awesome, this is gonna work out great... I hope. Thanks for all the help, guys.

The only real difference between 3rd gen exhaust systems are the cat connections. If you just plan on replacing that with whatever matches the rest of the parts you can pretty much use any 3rd gen headers and cat back you want on any other 3rd gen. If you’re willing to modify hangers and then you can add the 4th gen cat backs to your choices.

FWIW, I was VERY happy with headman shorties (I like to call them ¾ length, they’re longer then most shorties, the collectors exit at the bottom of the pan), a custom home built y (there wasn’t one available for those headers at the time, there is now) with dual high flow cats and 3” pipes with no muffler(s) on my crossfire car, it was a great setup from both a power and sound perspective.
