exhaust manifold leak

I own a 1986 V6 2.8L Camaro that is my first car and is in decently rough shape. I use the car to get places, such as work, but I am hoping to also use the car as a way to learn about cars. My ultimate goal is to gain a working knowledge of car repair and restore my car while at the same time powering it up (possible V8 transplant in the future?). Anyways, my car is very loud and I have been told this is due to a leaking exhaust manifold. My question is, how hard is the manifold/gasket to replace. Can a rookie like me do it myself with the proper tools, or is it somethign best left to an expert?

It isn't too hard. You should be able to handle it with basic hand tools, assuming you don't break off any rusted bolts.

I'd suggest you determine first exactly where the leak is. You may find you've got a rusted up or rusted off pipe, rather than a simple gasket blow-out.

Maybe you just need to tighten the manifold bolts? I know with IROC's atleast, there were no manifold gaskets out of the factory. I'm not sure if the 2.8's got them or not.

The leak is right where the headers and manifold meet, making me beleive it has something to do with the gasket or at least a loose connection.

Then it might be a warped manifold or a loose bolt issue. Either way you 2.8 dident come with gaskets from the factory so getting a gasket set would improve the chances of sealing. Last time I checked most of the parts stores dident have a listing for the 2.8 gaskets at leat for a 86 S10 but I do know they have them for the newer 60* engines so if all else fails tell them it's a 95 with a 3.4L.
