How do you tell if the cat is clogged?

I have an '89 RS with the 305 TBI and factory exhaust. It's running a little rough now, and it surges at idle/minimum throttle when warm and seems to be a little sluggish past 3500 rpm.

I would like to know how to check for a clogged cat.

Also, if I remove it all together, do I have to do anything other than weld a straight pipe in?

Thanx

Aren't all our 305 TBIs sluggish after 3500? If you cat is clogged first thing you should notice is horrible gas mileage, a drastic change from what you were previously getting. Second, if there is ratteling coming from the cat, or something of the sort.

What was said above. Also, if you can't hear it rattleing, some of the Honey comb could be lodged in the pipe. Causeing the Cat to Glow Red after you drive it awhile.

That is a very good indication your Cat is clogged!!
