V8 exhaust on my V6... OK???

I was at my dads house in his garage building a 355 for his old Bel Air station wagon when the neighbor across the street came over and we started talking about motors and such.

He looks over at my Camaro (92 RS) and starts reminiscing about all the Camaro's he's had over the years (He has a 2002 Firebird right now that is pretty damn nice)

Then he mentions he has a Flowmaster catback system that will bolt right up to me (I think I have to change the hangers though) but he mentions it's off a V8 car which is why he doesn't want to run it.

His buddy gave it to him, and its a 3 inch flowmaster system that came off a 305. The guy gave it to him because he blew a catalytic converter up and it went into the muffler so he just bought a new setup. (I just shook the crap out of it for about an hour until nothing else came out and I couldn't hear anything rattle in there anymore)

He said it would mess up what the computer reads because he has a V6 too and it would make his car run funny.

I kind of think this sounds like bull, seems to me that anything you changed AFTER the cat wouldn't do much to affect it at all, especially since I won't even be changing the intermediate pipes to the size of the exhaust size yet...

I don't want it to sound "*****" but I welcome any addition to the power of the car (though I doubt it will be much)

So my questions...

1. Will adding this exhaust degrade the performance of my vehicle in any way?

2. Will it throw a code or adversely affect my computer? (I don't mind if it throws a harmless code, but I'd like to know if it will)

3. What kind of power can I expect, if any at all?

4. Will hollowing out my cat allow the system to breathe even better until I get my high flow cat?

I want to put the exhaust in because I'm building a 383 stroker for the car that will go in next summer, I've slowly been getting the rest of the car ready for the V8 even though some of the stuff seems silly to put on a V6 car, lol... (subframe connectors, aftermarket torque arm, etc)

Check out the Flowmaster web site. Check the p/n for the 6 and V8 systems. If the p/n is the same you are good to go.

I don't think the part number would tell me that would it?

If it's different... It doesn't neccesarily mean that I can't use it...

Because even if it doesn't ADD power, I'd still put it on as long as I know it doesn't degrade from the performance or reliability/mpg from the car as is...

But I'll still check, because I see the logic you have behind your reasoning, and if it's the same I figure I AM good to go.

Thanks for taking the time to reply man.

A pipe is a pipe. Now there are different quality ones and all sorts of things, but if there is less restriction you'll have less power loss. It won't throw codes as far as I know. I put the same Flowmaster muffler and pipes on my V6 and V8.

a few years ago, I put a v8 flowmaster cat back from an 86 trans am onto my v6 90 firebird. The exhaust guy fixed the bracket and I was off to the races. When I put my v8 in it just made things easier. No problems ever.
