Simple Smog Pump Help!

Okay, it recently came to my attention that my serpentine belt is squeaking. I figured since I have to replace it anyway, I might as well get rid of the smog pump. I read the tech article and it helped in no way whatsoever. I tried a few searches, and still nothing. So I'm just gonna ask...

1) How do you actually remove the smug pump?

2) Are there any pipes/hoses that need to come out with it?

3) How do you reroute the belt?

4) (stupid question ) The smog pump is the one under the AC pump right?

I want to do this, and my car is my daily driver so I can't afford any surprises. Thanks for any hlep.

There are two torx bits that hold the smog pump to the accessory bracket. There is an AIR fitting that is held onto the back of the pump with a few bolts. Surely a search would have brought this up. Take a few minutes with a flashlight and take a look at the pump itself. It is pretty seld explanatory. As for the routing look at the tech article again.

This may help. The second diagram down is the one you need.

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

96.8 inches I believe. I just did this this week.

To remove the pump, you have to remove the 3 10mm bolts holding the pulley on first so you can access the torx bolts. Also, there is a small pipe bolted to the back of the pump, remove that too. Once the pulley and pump are out, put the new belt on.

Have you addressed the AIR tubes on the manifolds?

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

Does anyone have a picture of this?

I'm a little unsure of what to do as far as plugging the manifold. What do you use to do this and I can't tell where I'll need to plug it. Also, where does the pipe on the back of the SP go and does it need to be plugged?

My smog pump has gone bad and I'd much prefer to just get rid of it than buy a new one. Thanks for any help!

Got the 3 10mm bolts out Went to torx and after I slipped 4 times I put the 3 10 mm bolts back in and went back inside lol

Maybe next time I'll try air tools

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

I ended up using a longer belt the 96.8 belt wasn't gonna make it on,
plus my belt routing is exactly like the delete route with or without the smog pump

I ended up using a gates k060980 belt

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

Okay I'm making a big move with my car this spring, and part of it is headers and a y pipe. So I was wondering about the air tubes going into the exhaust manifold. Main question is does removing the smog pump add any horse power? And is it better go with a delete pulley, or re route with a different belt?

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

Smog pump doesn't add horsepower when removed, other than some parasitic drag is taken off the engine which is minimal.
If you could run the pump all the time and pump air to the area of the header flange it would give a better performance gain, as it creates a afterburn effect to help scavenge the cylinders better.
You would have to richen the fuel mixture when doing so. Plug reading can be your friend.
The air pump, in normal operation, is only used when the engine is cold to reduce emissions. When warm, it shuts off.

Re: Simple Smog Pump Help!

Last summer I removed the air pump and tubes when I installed new Dyno Don's headers and y-pipe plus a Magnaflow Cat and 3" cat-back exhaust. Dyno Don has an option for header with the tubes but I didn't want the clutter; however, I did add the pulley delete to maintain the same look at the front end.
