smog emissions crap

i recently bought a set of headers and full 3" exhaust. When it all arrived I didn't have time to install everything because I had to be at work the next morning, so I was just checking everything out to make sure I knew exactly what I had to do to install the headers. My car came from California so it has all that smog emissions crap on it. I had always just assumed that I could just take all of that off and cap off all the lines and hoses and stuff and it would run just the same. I called the local chevy dealer just to make sure and they told me that doing so could cause it to miss out and run really rough like if the oxygen sensor was bad. Will removing the smog stuff make this happen? and is there a way to remove it and still keep the car running smoothly?

Removing the AIR system (tubes on the headers) will do nothing more than throw a code. Car will run the same.

It won't make it miss. I've never heard of removal setting a code.

Removal of the AIR system on a TBI car will not throw a code. Removing the ERG will.

My mistake, no codes. I always thought my car was throwing an AIR code, I guess it really doesn't make sense if it did.
