TBI Catback

Does any one know if a 2.5" converter and catback will bolt up to 89 rs with a TBI 305 without changing the Y pipe?

whoever is installing your catback should be able to make you an adapter to fit it...

Nothing to worry about

Thats alot of money to install a catback....it shouldnt cost more than 150 dollars...it varies though from location...

You can always buy the adapter yourself from any auto parts store and just point to the object of where you want it installed...and, I think that if they were to do the adaption, they shouldnt charge you any more than what was quoted...all it is a piece of metal enlarged..

If i get a 3 inch cat to go along with a 3 in TPI catback, how would it attach to my 2.25 y pipe? Would this cause problems or can the person whose installing it use a reducer or something?

Again the shop will make an adapter to fit it onto the y-pipe, there are ways to bypass things like this. I mean look at me, I managed to fit a 3 inch muffler onto my stock i-pipe and stock tail pipe....They use adapters for these things...

I would buy a tailored TBI cat-back ($350) and either install it yourself or call around and get a price. Most TBI cat-backs are 3" have have the 2.25" reducer already implemented on the end of the y-pipe for proper cat allignment/hookup. These kits can be installed with simple hand tools and any exhaust shop should be able to install it for less than $100. "Home made" exhaust shop cat-backs are junk and will not provided the nice 3" smooth mandrel pipes that you really want.

If you want a full 3" system down the road than you can just cut off the reducer and weld/slip in a 3" cat. If you are going with the whole shebang right now I would buy a cat, cat-back and header kit desinged for a '86 or later TPI car. This way it will all be 3" without any reducers.

Thats still gonna cost at least $500 with the converter. The converter by its self cost $150 from the muffler shop.
