When I purchased my car guy said he couldnt get any power till he installed the cat. He had taken it off when he put the new system on. Is this statement true? Just wondering.

That sounds strange to me. With a modern cat, he shouldn't gain or loose more than 2 hp max with it in or out.

So the guy said with the cat off, the car was slow right? Then he must have been driving it with an open y pipe. It probably felt slower, but it wasnt.

Running open headers changes the tuned length of the exhaust, which usually moves the power band up a couple hundred RPMs. The power is still there, the engine just has to wind up more to get there.
