Spitting out black gunk?

Hello all,
I have noticed over the past 3 days that my exhaust has been spitting out black carbon (I assume) from the rear tail pipes. I first noticed it 3 days ago because I saw black stuff fly on the road followed by a cloud of white smoke Is this common or what do I need to do to fix this problem? I am running headers, to a Y, to a cat, to a flowmaster, and out with dual, any suggestions?

lots of black suddy smoke means its running really rich. could be a dead cylinder or just an uncomplete burn in 1 or more chambers...

white smoke is usually caused by antifreeze getting into your exhaust or combustion chamber...

is it just like black suddy all the time, then rarely puffs out white smoke or what??

hows the motor running? any different than before? high mileage motor?

Thanks for the quick reply,
The motor has about 4000 on the rebuild, I have been adjusting the carb as much as I can without rejetting it because I live 7500 above sea level. When I got the car home from Baltimore I removed the plugs and they were covered with carbon on the drivers side bank, I just did a tune up and it seems to run erattic at times although it does fine It smokes in the morning when I am starting it maybe because I press on the throttle and I shouldn't with an electric choke, other than that is doesn't smoke, when it does smake the color varies. The smoke that came from the exhaust 3 days ago looked cloudy and more white than black, but I saw some black stuff shoot on the road like I saw today.

sounds like a rich condition. I'm guessing your running pretty rich, and by rejetting you could possibly raise your performance by getting it to run better. but you should be able to tell if she is running healthy or not. if its too rich, it'll sort of like stumble on itself, and you'll smell gas alot, but it is possible your running just a little too rich also...so maybe this isn't the complete problem...

whats the story on the cat? you said your exhaust shot something out? sounds like your exhaust is getting lots of build up somewhere, and the cat is usually the spot for that. is it new? aftermarket? stock??

I am sure it is running pretty rich, I do smell gas alot. As far as the exhaust I am not 100% on the condition or age of it, I am going to Midas for a free inspection because I am pretty sure it has a leak also. When I looked at the joints it looks like they were not welded together but epoxied or something? I will let you know after I get it inspected, and thanks for replying.
